Remember the controversial diabetes drug Avandia? In 2010 we told you about
two FDA drug safety reviewers who warned the agency that Avandia posed
serious risks of heart attack and heart failure when compared with other
diabetes drugs. Since then, the drug has been removed from the market in most
countries and has been under severe restrictions in the US.

In a combined meeting of separate FDA advisory committees, 20 of 26 panelists
voted to recommend removing or modifying Avandia’s highly restrictive label
and distribution system. Five voted to keep the restrictions in place, while one
panelist voted to remove the product from the market altogether.

There has been only one large, randomized trial for the safety of
rosiglitazone, the drug that is marketed as Avandia. That trial—sponsored by
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the drug’s manufacturer—was called RECORD
(Rosiglitazone Evaluated for Cardiac Outcomes and Regulation of Glycaemia in
Diabetes). Serious flaws were found in RECORD’s methodology, its results were
questioned, and the trial was widely discredited.

In 2010, FDA required GSK’s RECORD results to be reexamined and re-
adjudicated. What was the FDA’s motivation for reviewing Avandia? GSK didn’t
request that the drug be reviewed. Could it be, as Steve Nissen suggests in
Forbes, because FDA “is seeking to avoid accountability for its role in the
Avandia tragedy”? FDA’s official position is that they asked for the re-
adjudication because of “the public interest in Avandia, the extensive
history of the product, and the continued uncertainty of the risk surrounding
this drug.”

Duke University’s Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) was selected for the
re-adjudication, and they found that the risk for cardiovascular death,
myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke to be virtually the same as the
original study concluded. Because these new results reaffirmed GSK’s
findingsthat the drug was no more unsafe than other diabetes products in
its class,

The panelists were sufficiently reassured that the drug was safeenough
to lift restrictions.

Unfortunately, other data paint a very different picture:

    In 2005 and 2006 GSK secretly conducted an analysis of cardiovascular
safety of Avandia, and concluded that the drug increased the risk of heart
attacks and related events by 30%. Since two-thirds of diabetics eventually
die of cardiovascular complications anyway, this 30% hike is terrifying.

    In 2006 GSK informed the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research
(CDER) of the secret analysis, but FDA and CDER agreed to conceal this hazard
from patients and practitioners.
    During a public hearing, independent FDA statisticians reported an 80%
increased risk of heart attack. Avandia is estimated to have caused 83,000
heart attacks in the United States alone.

    Adverse effects caused by the drug are currently the subject of over
13,000 lawsuits against GSK. As of July 2010, GSK has agreed to settlements
on more than 11,500 of these suits.

    Last year, GSK pled guilty of criminal conduct, partially for concealing
the hazards of Avandia. The company paid a $3 billion fine—the largest in US
history.

In addition, the re-adjudication process itself was biased. GSK prepared the
study materials before submitting them to Duke for analysis, rather than
allowing the university to review the raw data. (On the widespread problem of
publication bias, see our article in this issue.)

On top of that, key members of the 2010 advisory committee that decided to
place restrictions on Avandia in the first place were not part of the 2013
meeting. Of the twenty-seven member panel, fourteen of the experts were on
the panel last time, and they were the people with a more favorable attitude
toward Avandia. This is in contrast to the other experts who did not serve on
the panel a second time—like Steven Nissen, who was one of the most outspoken
critics on the panel. FDA claims all panelists were invited, it does not
appear they made a huge effort to ensure their participation; Nissen says he
was not re-invited. With all of the big nay-sayers out of the picture, it’s
no surprise the panel voted to lift the restrictions on this dangerous drug.

FDA should focus more on advisory panelists who have true conflicts of
interest. A 2007 law placed caps on the number of waivers that could be
granted allowing experts with conflicts of interest; a 2012 law removed those
safeguards. When there are no restrictions on experts with conflicts of
interest serving on FDA advisory panels, more drugs with dangerous side
effects could certainly enter the market.

How Enzymes Might Help Treat Cancer


    Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (an enzyme that digests proteins). In the Planta Medica study, it was injected directly into the abdominal cavity. Getting enzymes from your digestive tract into your bloodstream isn't as easy as it would seem, as enzymes are very susceptible to denaturing and must be helped to survive the highly acidic environment in your stomach. They are often given an "enteric coating" to help them survive the journey through your digestive tract.

    And then, there is the matter of absorption. For nearly 100 years, medical dogma insisted that enzymes taken orally were too large to pass through the digestive tract wall.

    However, there is now a good deal of research that they can indeed pass through your intestine intactiii and into your bloodstream and lymphatic system, where they can deliver their services to the rest of your body... one of the mysteries of medical science.

    Now that we know this is possible, systemic oral enzymes have been used to treat problems ranging from sports injuries to arthritis to heart disease and cancer, particularly in European countries. But most of the research has been published in non-English language journals.

Is Cancer the Result of Diminished Pancreatic Enzymes?


    This systemic use of enzymes is just now taking off in the United States, but the use of enzymes to treat cancer has its roots all the way back to 1911 with John Beard's The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer and Its Scientific Basis. Beard believed cancer was a result of diminished pancreatic enzymes, impairing your immune response. A study in 1999iv suggests he may have been right on target.

    Ten patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer were treated with large doses of oral pancreatic enzymes (along with detoxification and an organic diet), and their survival rates were 3 to 4 times higher than patients receiving conventional treatment. Proteolytic enzymes can be helpful in treating cancer because they help restore balance to your immune system. Dr. Nick Gonzalez in New York City, NY has also done a lot of work on enzymes in cancer treatment and has written a book on the subject.v

    Some of the ways proteolytic enzymes can be helpful in the fight against cancer are:


        Boosting cytokines, particularly interferon and tumor necrosis factor, which are very important warriors in destroying cancer cells.
        Decreasing inflammation.
        Dissolving fibrin: Cancer cells hide under a cloak of fibrin to escape detection. Once the cancer cells are "uncloaked," they can be spotted and attacked by your immune system. It is also thought that fibrin makes cancer cells "stick together," which increases the chance for metastases.
        German studies have shown that systemic enzymes increase the potency of macrophages and killer cells 12-fold.

    Fortunately, you get (or should be getting) many enzymes from the foods you consume—particularly, raw foods. These directly help with your digestive process. The more raw foods you eat, the lower the burden on your body to produce the enzymes it needs, not only for digestion, but for practically everything. Whatever enzymes are not used up in digestion are then available to help with other important physiological processes.

    This is one of the reasons why it is so important to eat a diet rich in fresh, organic, raw foods. You may even want to try juicing some of your vegetables, and the core of your pineapple, as a way of getting more nutrients—and enzymes—into your body. In the event you use enzymes in supplement form, it is crucial that, in order for enzymes to be used systemically, they must be consumed on an empty stomach. Otherwise, your body will use them for digesting your food, instead of being absorbed into the blood and doing their work there.

Surprising Cancer-Fighting Benefits of Pineapple Enzyme



    One of the reasons why conventional cancer treatment is such a dismal
failure in the United States is because it relies on chemotherapy.

    Chemotherapy drugs are, by their very nature, extremely toxic and
typically work against your body's natural ability to fight cancer, e.g.
destroying host immunity instead of supporting it.

    One of the biggest drawbacks to chemotherapy is the fact that it destroys
healthy cells throughout your body right along with cancer cells, a "side
effect" that often leads to accelerated death, not healing.

    Another devastating side effect of chemotherapy is the way it actually
supports the more chemo resistant and malignant cell subpopulations within
tumors (e.g. cancer stem cells), both killing the more benign cells and/or
senescent cells within the tumor that keep it slow-growing, or even harmless.

    As a result, this unleashes a more aggressive, treatment-resistant type
of cancer to wreak havoc on the body.

    A handful of natural compounds have been discovered, however, which
exhibit an effect called "selective cytotoxicity."  This means they are able
to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells and tissue unharmed.

    This type of cancer treatment is intelligent, targeted and will not
result in the death of the patient from "collateral damage" in what is
increasingly a failed war not against the cancer being treated, but the
patient's own irreversibly devastated body.

Bromelain in Pineapples Kills Cancer Cells Without Harming You


    One such compound is bromelain, an enzyme that can be extracted from
pineapple stems. Research published in the journal Planta Medica found that
bromelain was superior to the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorauracil in treating
cancer in an animal study.i Researchers stated:

        "This antitumoral effect [of bromelain] was superior to that of 5-FU
[5-fluorouracil], whose survival index was approximately 263 %, relative to
the untreated control."

    What makes this impact particularly impressive is that the bromelain
worked without causing additional harm to the animals. The chemo drug 5-
fluorauracil, on the other hand, has a relatively unsuccessful and dangerous
track record despite being used for nearly 40 years.

    As written by GreenMedInfo:


        "As a highly toxic, fluoride-bound form of the nucleic acid uracil, a
normal component of RNA, the drug is supposed to work by tricking more
rapidly dividing cells -- which include both cancer and healthy intestinal,
hair follicle, and immune cells -- into taking it up, thereby inhibiting
(read: poisoning) RNA replication enzymes and RNA synthesis.…

        When a person dies following conventional cancer treatment it is all
too easy to "blame the victim" and simply write that patient's cancer off as
"chemo-resistant," or "exceptionally aggressive," when in fact the non-
selective nature of the chemotoxic agent is what ultimately lead to their
death."

    Selective cytotoxicity is indeed a property that is only found among
natural compounds; no chemotherapy drug yet developed is capable of this
effect. Aside from bromelain, other examples of natural compounds that have
been found to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells include:

        Vitamin C -- Dr. Ronald Hunninghake carried out a 15-year research
project called RECNAC (cancer spelled backwards). His groundbreaking
research in cell cultures showed that vitamin C was selectively cytotoxic
against cancer cells.

        Eggplant extract: Solasodine rhamnosyl glycosides (BEC), which is a
fancy name for extracts from plants of the Solanaceae family, such as
eggplant, tomato, potato, Bell peppers, and tobacco, also impact only
cancerous cells leaving normal cells alone. Eggplant extract cream appears to
be particularly useful in treating skin cancer. Dr. Bill E. Cham, a leading
researcher in this area, explains:

            "The mode of action of SRGs [glycoalkaloids solasodine rhamnosy
glycosides (BEC)] is unlike any current antineoplastic [anti-tumor] agent.

Specific receptors for the SRGs present only on cancer cells but not normal
cells are the first step of events that lead to apoptosis in cancer cells
only, and this may explain why during treatment the cancer cells were being
eliminated and normal cells were replacing the killed cancer cells with no
scar tissue being formed."

        Turmeric (Curcumin Extract): Of all the natural cancer fighters out
there, this spice has been the most intensely researched for exhibiting
selective cytotoxicity.ii Remarkably, in a 2011 study published in the
Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, rats administered curcumin, the primary
polyphenol in turmeric, saw a decrease in experimentally-induced brain tumors
in 9 out of 11 treated, while noting that the curcumin did not affect the
viability of brain cells "suggesting that curcumin selectively targets the
transformed [cancerous] cells."

Then, about half the participants also underwent angioplasty, usually with stents.

Over the next five years, 19% of those in both groups died or had a heart attack. Similar numbers of people in both groups -- about 12% -- were hospitalized for heart problems.

However, there were some benefits to angioplasty. People who had the procedure were 40% less likely to need another procedure to open up blocked heart arteries. And, particularly in the first two years, they reported better quality of life and less frequent episodes of chest pain.

But over time, some of the differences started to dissipate. By five years later, 74% of people who had angioplasty were angina-free vs. 72% of those who got drugs alone, a difference so small it could be due to chance.

Results Stun Medical Community


Boden notes that COURAGE is "the first properly-sized study to answer the question of whether angioplasty and stents reduce the risk of death and heart attacks in people with stable coronary artery disease."

The results came as a shock to many in the cardiology community -- even to the researchers themselves.

"The study was designed with the hypothesis that the combination of angioplasty and optimal medical therapy would be superior," Boden says. "But the results do not support its benefit in reducing heart attacks and death when used as an initial management strategy."

So why would so many doctors recommend a costly procedure without strong evidence it works?

The average cost of having an angioplasty was $38,000 in 2003, according to the American Heart Association.

Nissen thinks it’s because “it seems so intuitively obvious: If you open up a block artery, you’ll fix the problem.”

American Heart Association President Raymond J. Gibbons, MD, chief of cardiology at the Mayo Clinic, adds that there’s a financial incentive for doctors. "People get paid for how many procedures they do," he tells WebMD.

But this study "clearly shows there is no advantage to PCI [percutaneous coronary intervention, or angioplasty] as an initial strategy. It’s unnecessary," Gibbons says. "Angioplasty should be reserved for patients [who can’t be helped] by medical therapy."

Adds Nissen, "This study will change a lot of thinking. The benefits of angioplasty in people with stable chest pain is very modest, at most. It should be reserved for patients for intolerable symptoms."
Results Questioned

But many doctors who perform angioplasties say the procedure’s proven benefits in relieving angina, or chest pain, is getting lost in the shuffle.

Donald Baim, MD, chief medical officer of Boston Scientific, a manufacturer of drug-eluting stents, says, "COURAGE is not a catastrophic failure. [It shows that angioplasty plus stents] improves symptoms."

Marty Leon, MD, of Columbia University Medical Center, says, "There are so many deep flaws in the way this study was executed and planned. It was rigged to fail," and it did. "This study should not affect treatment patterns."

Boden says the criticism is unfounded, pointing out that the researchers purposely studied people at medium to high risk of having a heart attack or dying -- "the very people you would expect to benefit most from the procedure."

March 26, 2007 (New Orleans) -- Hundreds of thousands of Americans may
undergo unnecessary angioplasty and stent procedures to open clogged heart
arteries each year, a landmark study suggests.

The long-awaited results show that people with stable coronary artery disease
who got common medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels
were no more likely to die or to have a heart attack over the next five years
than those who also underwent angioplasty with stents.

Of the more than 1.2 million angioplasty procedures performed each year, at
least 50% of them are done on an elective basis in people with stable
coronary artery disease, says Stephen Nissen, MD, president of the American
College of Cardiology (ACC) and head of cardiovascular medicine at The
Cleveland Clinic.

In people with coronary artery disease, plaque builds up in the arteries,
making it harder for blood to get through, thereby depriving the heart muscle
of oxygen. This can lead to chronic chest pain that worsens during exercise
and to heart attacks.

During angioplasty, a balloon at the end of a long tube is threaded through
an artery in the groin. The doctor shimmies the probe up through the
patient's leg and into the arteries of the heart, inflating the tiny balloon
at the spot where the vessel has narrowed.

To keep the vessel open, doctors usually add a stent to the end of the
balloon catheter. These metal, mesh-like tubes prop open clogged arteries to
restore blood flow.

Angioplasty Still Best for Some


The study's results do not apply to people who get stents because they are in
the midst of a heart attack or whose chest pain suddenly gets worse, doctors
stress. For them, angioplasty is a proven lifesaver.

Additionally, angioplasty is better at relieving the chest pain associated
with angina, says researcher William Boden, MD, of Buffalo General
Hospital/Kaleida Health in Buffalo, N.Y.

"For an individual patient, angioplasty may still be the best option," he
tells WebMD. "But there has been an implication that if you give patients
drug therapy rather than angioplasty, you’re giving them less than optimal
treatment.

"Now we know that if you opt for medicine, you are not putting patients at
risk," Boden says.

The study, known as COURAGE, was released at the annual meeting of the
American College of Cardiology and simultaneously published online by The New
England Journal of Medicine.

Stent Patients as Likely to Die, Have Heart Attack


The researchers studied 2,287 people with stable coronary artery disease who
experienced chest pain for about two years, with an average of 10 episodes
per week. All had at least a 70% blockage in one or more heart arteries.

All participants were put on optimal drug therapy, which includes
nitroglycerin to control chest pain, beta-blockers to control heart rate, ACE
inhibitors for lowering blood pressure, and statins to lower cholesterol.

Everyone was also urged to exercise more and lose weight and quit smoking, if
needed.

Stretch Your Food Budget Farther!


    Organization, Gadgets and Other Tips


        Keep milk and other highly perishable items on the middle shelf in your fridge, NOT in the door where temperatures fluctuate.
        Avoid mixing produce and meats in the same drawer, as cross contamination can lead to food waste.
        Avoid over-stocking your fridge, as a crowded fridge will keep air from circulating properly leading to warm spots that can cause spoilage.
        Avoid chopping up your fruits, veggies and meats before storage, as this will make them spoil faster.
        Glass mason jars make a great food-storage option, and you can seal them with an automatic vacuum sealer like Food Saver for even more freshness.
        Remove spoiled food from your fridge promptly to keep mold from transferring to fresh food.
        Get an ethylene gas absorber for your fridge; they’re available online and can keep your produce fresh up to three times longer than normal. There are many types of bags that can do this. They are typically called “green bags.” One example would be Debbie Meyer Green Bags.
        A gadget called the Herb Savor, which has a well for water and a plastic cover to keep herbs fresh, claims to make herbs last for up to three weeks.

Vacuum Packing: One of My Favorite Food-Storage Tips


    One of my all-time favorite tricks, which works for most produce, is to create a "vacuum pack" to help protect it from oxygen and airborne microbes that will accelerate its decay. Leave the produce in the bag it came in from the grocery store, place it against your chest and use your arm to squeeze the excess air out of the bag.

    Once the air is removed you can seal it with a twist tie and thus minimize exposure to oxygen. This simple technique can easily double or triple the normal shelf life of your vegetables by keeping air away from them. Alternatively, you can use an automatic vacuum sealer, like the FoodSaver available on Amazon, to do this automatically and create an even tighter, airtight seal.

    However, I nearly always store my food in quart or pint glass Ball jars. The FoodSaver brand also has a wide-mouth jar sealer attachment, which is ideal for sealing your leftovers, fermented veggies, sauces and other liquids stored in a wide-mouth jar, and can keep your food fresh up to five times longer. I regularly use it for extending the life of my vegetable juice and making my juicing more efficient so I don’t have to juice every day.

Food Loss and Waste is a Global Problem


    Curbing food loss and waste is something that should be a priority on both global food system and individual (consumption and behavioral) levels. As the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations reported:3

        "In developing countries the problem is chiefly one of inadequate harvest techniques, poor post-harvest management and logistics, lack of suitable infrastructure, processing and packaging, and lack of marketing information which would allow production to better match demand. The advice is therefore to strengthen the food supply chain by assisting small farmers to link directly to buyers. The private and public sectors should also invest more in infrastructure, transportation and in processing and packaging.

        In middle- and high-income countries food losses and waste stem largely from consumer behavior but also from lack of communication between different actors in the supply chain.

        At retail level, large quantities of food are also wasted due to quality standards that over-emphasize appearance. Surveys show that consumers are willing to buy produce not meeting appearance standards as long as it is safe and tastes good. Customers thus have the power to influence quality standards and should do so, the report said.

        Selling farm produce closer to consumers, without having to conform to supermarkets' quality standards, is another suggestion. This could be achieved through farmers' markets and farm shops. Good use for food that would otherwise be thrown away should be found. Commercial and charity organizations could work with retailers to collect, and then sell or use products that have been disposed of but are still good in terms of safety, taste and nutritional value."

Planning Your Meals Can Cut Down on Food Waste in Your Home


    The FAO report found that people in rich countries generally buy more food than they need, then end up throwing away the excess. They noted that "generally speaking, consumers fail to plan their food purchases properly … that means they often throw food away when 'best-before' dates expired." I've long stated that planning your meals is important for a number of reasons, one of which is reducing the amount of food that will go to waste, since you'll only buy what you need each time you visit the store, and you’ll have a plan in place to use it all up once you get home.

    I also recommend buying your food locally, preferably from a small organic farming operation you can visit and inspect for yourself. This guarantees that you get the freshest foods right from the start, giving you a few extra days of leeway before they spoil.

    Finally, for the packaged foods you do buy, they are often good beyond their expiration date. Unbeknownst to many, “best by” dates on many food packages are typically a measure of peak quality, not an indication of food safety. Typically, it is still safe to eat a food after the “best by” or “best before” date (the exception is infant formula, which has safety-based “use by” dates).

uneaten1 – that’s almost half.

    While some of this food is lost during production and processing (such as
produce that goes bad before it’s harvested), a significant amount is wasted
in people’s homes simply because it goes bad before it’s eaten.

Wasted Food Costs US Families Thousands of Dollars a Year…


    Not only does this amount to more than $2,000 in annual losses for the
average US household of four, but all of that wasted food uses up precious
stores of freshwater – about 25 percent of freshwater use is wasted on food
that’s not even eaten!

How to Make Your Groceries Last Longer: 27 Tips


    When you invest the time and money into a trip to the grocery store, you
    want to be sure the foods you purchase last as long as possible. The featured
     article has compiled more than two-dozen tricks to keep up your sleeve to do
     just that:

    Vegetables


        Store onions in old pantyhose to keep them fresh for up to eight
        months (tie a knot in between each one to keep them separate).
        Chop dry green onions and store them in an empty plastic water
        bottle. Put the bottle in the freezer and sprinkle out what you need when
        you’re cooking.
        When storing potatoes, keep them away from onions (this will make
        them spoil faster). Storing them with apples will help keep the potatoes from
        sprouting.
        Asparagus should be stored in your fridge upright in a glass of water
        (like cut flowers, cut the asparagus bottoms off first), and covered with a
        plastic bag.
        Store salad greens in a bowl covered with plastic wrap, and add a
        paper towel to help absorb moisture. A salad spinner will also help remove
        excess moisture -- a key culprit in wilting leaves -- from your greens.
         Mushrooms should be stored in a paper bag in a cool dry place, or in
        the fridge. Avoid storing mushrooms in plastic, as any trapped moisture will
       cause them to spoil.

    Fruits


        Swirl berries in a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider)
        to 10 parts water. You won’t taste the vinegar but the solution will help
        keep your berries from getting moldy and soft.
        When storing chopped avocado or guacamole, leave the pit in, spritz
        it with some lemon juice or olive oil, cover with plastic wrap, and put it in
        the fridge. This will help keep it from turning brown.
        If you spot a rotten apple, remove it right away, as one rotten apple
        really can spoil the whole bunch.
        Put plastic wrap around the crown of a bunch of bananas to keep them
       fresh for days longer (and be sure to store them away from other fruits, as
       they emit a lot of ethylene gas which accelerates ripening).
       Store tomatoes at room temperature away from sunlight, in a single
       layer with the stem side up (don’t put them in plastic bags, which will cause
       them to spoil faster).

    Herbs

 

        Store delicate herbs like parsley, basil, cilantro and chives upright
        in a glass of water (like you would arrange cut flowers) in your fridge. Put
        a plastic bag over the top and secure it around the glass with a rubber band
        for optimal freshness.
        Bunch oily herbs like thyme loosely together, secure them with a
        string around the base and hang them in your kitchen for storage.
        Fill an ice cube tray with olive oil, then add chopped herbs
        (rosemary, sage, thyme or oregano) to each cube. Pop one out when you’re
        cooking for instant herb-infused oil.
        Store fresh ginger root in the freezer. You can grate it frozen (peel
        and all) when cooking.

    Dairy and Nuts


        Rub the cut side of a block of cheese with butter to keep it from
        drying out.
        Cheese should be wrapped in cheese paper or wax paper, not plastic
        wrap, then put in a plastic baggie.
        Store cheese in the warmest part of your fridge, such as the
        vegetable or cheese drawer.
        Nuts can be stored in the freezer to keep them fresh longer. Ideally
        put them in Mason jars that have the air vacuumed out with a Food Saver and
        attachment.

    As time goes on, we're gaining more and more information about the important roles gut flora plays in maintaining overall health. The good news is that this is an area you can exercise a lot of control over. Your diet can quickly alter the composition of your gut flora. Processed foods high in sugar and chemical additives and low in nutrients is a surefire way to decimate the beneficial bacteria in your gut, allowing the harmful pathogenic kind to thrive.

    Research has also shown that your microflora has a significant impact on gene expression, such as the genes responsible for vitamin biosynthesis and metabolism. Probiotics have been found to influence the activity of hundreds of your genes, helping them to express in a positive, disease-fighting manner—some of which affect your body in a manner resembling the effects of certain medicines!

    A recent study published in the journal Natureiii found that "gut microbial communities represent one source of human genetic and metabolic diversity." According to the authors:

        "To examine how gut microbiomes differ among human populations, here we characterize bacterial species in fecal samples from 531 individuals, plus the gene content of 110 of them. The cohort encompassed healthy children and adults from the Amazonas of Venezuela, rural Malawi and US metropolitan areas and included mono- and dizygotic twins.

        Shared features of the functional maturation of the gut microbiome were identified during the first three years of life in all three populations, including age-associated changes in the genes involved in vitamin biosynthesis and metabolism.

        Pronounced differences in bacterial assemblages and functional gene repertoires were noted between US residents and those in the other two countries. These distinctive features are evident in early infancy as well as adulthood. Our findings underscore the need to consider the microbiome when evaluating human development, nutritional needs, physiological variations and the impact of westernization." [Emphasis mine]

Three Global Varieties of Gut Bacteria

    You might not be aware of this, but scientists are now busy mapping the microbes in your body in much the same way as they mapped the human genome. The Human Microbiome Projectiv was launched in October 2008, with the goal to catalogue all the bacterial inhabitants in the human body. Researchers have identified most of the microbes in the human gut, but they still don't know much about the actions of each individual microbe, or how they work together. An article published in Wired Magazine last year discussed this fascinating workv. It also features an illustrative graphic of the primary microbes found in humans across the globe. vi

    According to another study, also published in the journal Naturevii last year, each of us harbors one of three primary "communities" of bacteria. The health ramifications of each are still being teased out.

        Bacteriocides
        Prevotella
        Ruminococcus

    According to Wired:

        "In terms of function, each of the enterotype-defining genera has been linked to nutrient-processing preferences — Bacteroides to carbohydrates, Prevotella to proteins called mucins, or Ruminococcus to mucins and sugars — but far more may be going on. "Exactly what they are doing in there is still to be explored," said Arumugam, who also mentioned enterotype-based differences in drug metabolism as another possible implication of the findings."

The Ideal Way to Optimize Your Gut Health

    The ideal balance of beneficial to pathogenic bacteria in your gut is about 85 percent good bacteria and 15 percent bad. Maintaining this ideal ratio is what it's all about when we're talking about optimizing your gut health. Historically, people didn't have the same problems with their gut health as we do today for the simple fact that they got large quantities of beneficial bacteria, i.e. probiotics, from their diet in the form of fermented or cultured foods, which were invented long before the advent of refrigeration and other forms of food preservation.

    You can ferment virtually any food, and every traditional culture has traditionally fermented their foods to prevent spoilage. There are also many fermented beverages and yoghurts. Quite a large percent of all the foods that people consumed on a daily basis were fermented, and each mouthful provides trillions of beneficial bacteria—far more than you can get from a probiotics supplement.

    Here's a case in point: It's unusual to find a probiotic supplement containing more than 10 billion colony-forming units. But when my team actually tested fermented vegetables produced by probiotic starter cultures, they had 10 trillion colony-forming units of bacteria. Literally, one serving of vegetables was equal to an entire bottle of a high potency probiotic! Fermented foods also give you a wider variety of beneficial bacteria, so all in all, it's your most cost effective alternative.

    A new study in the journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice shows that
microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract form an intricate, living
fabric of natural controls affecting body weight, energy, and nutritioni. The
findings may offer new ideas on how to treat nutrition-related maladies,
including obesity and a range of serious health consequences linked to
under-nutrition, the scientists said.

    An article in Science Daily reported on the featured findings, statingii:


        "The microbes in the human gut belong to three broad domains, defined
by their molecular phylogeny: Eukarya, Bacteria, and Achaea. Of these,
bacteria reign supreme, with two dominant divisions -- known as Bacteroidetes
and Firmicutes -- making up over 90 percent of the gut's microbial
population... Within the bacterial categories... enormous diversity exists.

        Each individual's community of gut microbes is unique and profoundly
sensitive to environmental conditions, beginning at birth. Indeed, the mode
of delivery during the birthing process has been shown to affect an infant's
microbial profile. Communities of vaginal microbes change during pregnancy in
preparation for birth, delivering beneficial microbes to the newborn.

        At the time of delivery, the vagina is dominated by a pair of
bacterial species, Lactobacillus and Prevotella. In contrast, infants
delivered by caesarean section typically show microbial communities
associated with the skin, including Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, and
Propionibacterium.

        While the full implications of these distinctions are still murky,
evidence suggests they may affect an infant's subsequent development and
health, particularly in terms of susceptibility to pathogens." [Emphasis

How Your Baby's Gut Flora Impacts His/Her Future Health


    The health implications of this variation in gut bacteria acquired from
birth is exactly what Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride's research sheds light
upon. Her research shows there's a profound dynamic interaction between your
gut, your brain, and your immune system, starting from birth. She has
developed what might be one of the most profoundly important treatment
strategies for a wide range of neurological, psychological, and autoimmune
disorders—all of which are heavily influenced by your gut health.

    I believe her Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and Gut and Physiology
Syndrome (GAPS) Nutritional program is vitally important for MOST people, as
the majority of people have such poor gut health due to poor diet and toxic
exposures, but it's particularly crucial for pregnant women and young
children.

    Children who are born with severely damaged gut flora are not only more
susceptible to disease; they're also more susceptible to vaccine damage,
which may help explain why some children develop symptoms of autism after
receiving one or more childhood vaccinations.

    According to Dr. Campbell-McBride, most autistic children are born with
perfectly normal brains and sensory organs. The trouble arises when they fail
to develop normal gut flora. In a previous interview, she explained the chain
of events that is typical for many, if not most, autistic children:

        "What happens in these children [is that] they do not develop normal
gut flora from birth… As a result, their digestive system—instead of being a
source of nourishment for these children—becomes a major source of toxicity.
These pathogenic microbes inside their digestive tract damage the integrity
of the gut wall. So all sort of toxins and microbes flood into the
bloodstream of the child, and get into the brain of the child.

        That usually happens in the second year of life in children who were
breast fed because breastfeeding provides a protection against this abnormal
gut flora. In children who were not breastfed, I see the symptoms of autism
developing in the first year of life. So breastfeeding is crucial to protect
these children.

        ... If the child's brain is clogged with toxicity, the child misses
that window of opportunity of learning and starts developing autism depending
on the mixture of toxins, depending on how severe the whole condition is, and
how severely abnormal the gut flora is in the child."

    It's important to understand that the gut flora your child acquires
during vaginal birth is dependent on the mother's gut flora. So if mother's
microflora is abnormal, the child's will be as well. Autism isn't the only
potential outcome in this case. GAPS may manifest as a conglomerate of
symptoms that can fit the diagnosis of either autism, or attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), dyslexia,
dyspraxia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, just to name a few
possibilities. Digestive issues, asthma, allergies, skin problems and
autoimmune disorders are also common outgrowths of GAPS, as it can present
itself either psychologically or physiologically.

The Importance of Fermented Foods and Probiotics


    Maintaining optimal gut flora, and 'reseeding' your gut with fermented
foods and probiotics when you're taking an antibiotic, may be one of the most
important steps you can take to improve your health. If you aren't eating
fermented foods, you most likely need to supplement with a probiotic on a
regular basis, especially if you're eating a lot of processed foods. As
explained by Dr. Campbell-McBride, poor diet in general, and each course of
antibiotics extols a heavy price:

        "Every course of antibiotics tends to wipe out the beneficial
bacteria and that gives a window of opportunity for the pathogens to
proliferate, to grow uncontrolled, and to occupy new niches in your gut. The
beneficial flora recovers, but different species of it take between two weeks
to two months to recover in the gut and that's a window of opportunity for
various pathogens to overgrow.

        What I see in the families of autistic children is that 100 percent
of mom's of autistic children have abnormal gut flora and health problems
related to that. But then I look at grandmothers on the mother's side, and I
find that the grandmothers also have abnormal gut flora, but much milder."

    In essence, what we have is a generational build-up of abnormal gut
flora, with each generation becoming ever more prone to being further harmed
from the use of antibiotics—and vaccines as well. To learn more about GAPS,

But new evidence shows that omega-3s may reverse sugar’s brain damage.


Mainstream medicine is finally waking up to what the natural health community
has known for quite a while. Sugar, particularly in the form of refined
fructose, impairs one’s cognitive ability. So far the evidence is limited to
rats. But it is very likely that the results apply to humans too.

In a recent UCLA study, rats spent five days learning how to navigate a new
maze. Then they were kept away from the maze and divided into two groups and
fed different diets: one rich in omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds and fish
oil, and one deficient in omega-3s. In both groups, the rats’ drinking water
was replaced with a syrup that was 15% fructose (most sodas are about 12%
sugar). Six weeks later, the rats were put back into the maze to see how well
they performed.

None of the rats were able to navigate the maze as quickly as they did six
weeks earlier, though those on the high-omega-3 diet did significantly better
than those in the other group.

The group fed fructose without omega-3s also had higher triglyceride levels,
higher glucose levels, and higher insulin levels. In fact, they seemed to
enter a state of insulin resistance. Their brains showed a decrease in brain
energy metabolism and synaptic activity, which is important for learning and
memory.

Insulin resistance, together with belly fat, high blood pressure, high blood
sugar, low HDL, and high triglycerides, are precursors to Type 2 diabetes.

Together these risk factors are known as metabolic syndrome.


The good news is that the UCLA study suggests that cutting out the sweet
drinks and eating a diet rich in omega-3s may actually reverse the damage
done by metabolic syndrome.

Besides improved memory function (making it vital for Alzheimer’s patients),
omega-3s can also help prevent heart attacks, resolve depression, reduce
pain, and even prevent prostate cancer.

Another recent study estimates that 68 million Americans had metabolic
syndrome in 2006, up from 50 million in 1990—which the researchers primarily
attributed to growing rates of abdominal obesity and high blood pressure. The
most significant increases were in women between the ages of 20 and 39.

Of course, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is found in a lot of processed
food; the average American consumes more than 60 pounds of it annually. The
consumption of cane sugar and beet sugar, which also contain fructose, was
only slightly lower.

There are many types of sweeteners besides fructose. And all of them have a
direct impact on the way our body functions. As we noted in February, HFCS,
fructose, sugar, aspartame, neotame, saccharine, and sucralose are all
chemical sweeteners often added to processed foods at great risk to health
with no benefits. There are a number of natural alternatives available, many
of them rich with antioxidants and minerals, that health-conscious people
should look into: raw organic honey, maple syrup, unsulfured raw sugarcane
molasses, coconut palm sugar, and Lo Han Guo. But even these natural
sweeteners should be used in moderation! Low-calorie alternatives include the
South American herb stevia, inulin (a powder isolated from the Jerusalem
artichoke), and sugar alcohols like erythritol (sugar alcohols should
probably be used in moderation).

This UCLA study is extremely important. Mainstream medicine grudgingly
acknowledges sugar’s negative effects on the body in general, but now has to
admit there is probably a negative effect on the brain as well. The study
also affirms the importance of omega-3 fatty acids to sustain one’s health.
