Shaving your Pubic Hair

According to a recent survey, a large percentage of US college students
remove some or all of their pubic hair, as does a sizable portion of the rest
of the population. It’s a growing trend that may actually have ancient roots,
as pubic hair removal was thought to have been practiced among women in
ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome.

In modern times, both men and women use a variety of methods (shaving,
waxing, clipping, lasers) to remove pubic hair, and describe various
motivations for doing so.

Among women, the most popular reasons include the belief that it looks
better in a bathing suit, increases feelings of attractiveness, feels more
comfortable and the belief that it’s cleaner.

Ironically, this latter reasoning may be contradictory, as new research
suggests shaving your pubic hair may actually increase your risk of
contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) known as molluscum
contagiosum.

The Viral STD Risk of Shaving Your Pubic Hair

Shaving or waxing can cause irritation and micro-trauma to your skin that
increases your risk of contracting a viral infection. Researchers of a new
case study observed that the number of cases of molluscum contagiosum have
risen along with rates of pubic hair removal.

To look into the link, they observed 30 patients at a private skin care
clinic in Nice, France, all of whom were infected with the molluscum virus.

Nearly all of them had removed their pubic hair, the vast majority by
shaving, followed by waxing and then clipping.

The finding supports the researchers theory that hairless genitals may
provide an opportunity for sexually transmitted diseases like molluscum to
take hold, with shaving showing the strongest association.

Molluscum contagiosum is spread easily, and the researchers suggested the
virus may have spread primarily through self-infection caused by scratching
skin irritated by shaving.

Other skin issues

were also noted among the study
participants, which may also have been related to the pubic hair removal.

These included:

Warts (the researchers suggested shaving your pubic hair may also
increase the risk of genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV))
        Bacterial skin infections
        Scars
        Ingrown hairs

What is Molluscum Contagiosum?

Despite its prevalence, molluscum contagiosum is one of the lesser-known
STDs. A type of pox virus, molluscum is actually most common in children,
although it also affects adults with weakened immune systems and can be
spread through sexual contact. The virus causes firm, pearl-like bumps on the
skin, which, though painless, can become easily red and inflamed.

If the bumps are scratched, the infection spreads easily person-to-person
as well as through contaminated objects. Shaving over the bumps can also

cause the virus to spread. In most cases the infection will resolve within
six to 12 months with no treatment, so keeping your immune system strong is
important. The bumps can also be removed to help prevent spread of the
infection.

Other STDs and Infections May Also be Linked to Pubic Hair Removal

Is the spread of viruses like molluscum contagiosum and the human
papillomavirus the only downside to removing your pubic hair, or are there
other consequences? Quite possibly, yes. Last year, a family physician called
for an end to the "war on pubic hair," claiming the practice of removing
pubic hair increases risks of infection and sexually transmitted diseases. As
reported by The Independent:

"As director of the health centre at Western University in Washington
State, US, she has seen the consequences. 'Pubic hair removal naturally
irritates and inflames the hair follicles, leaving microscopic open wounds.

Frequent hair removal is necessary to stay smooth, causing regular irritation
of the shaved or waxed area. When that is combined with the warm, moist
environment of the genitals, it becomes a happy culture media for some of the
nastiest bacterial pathogens.'...

In her practice it is not unusual to find patients with boils and
abscesses on their genitals from shaving as well as cellulitis, an infection
of the scrotum, labia or penis from shaving or from having sex with someone
infected. Herpes is also an increased risk 'due to the microscopic wounds
being exposed to virus carried by mouth or genitals.' 'It follows that there
may be vulnerability to the spread of other sexually transmitted diseases as
well,' she says.

Does Pubic Hair Have a Purpose?

The hairless ideal sought by so many people is in truth both unattainable
and probably not entirely healthful. Body hair will always grow back (even
laser hair removal will only subdue hair growth and thickness by 50 percent
or so with repeated treatments), and each time you remove the hair you're
causing some damage to your skin. Plus, hair does serve important functions,
including in the genital region, such as:

Protection: helping to prevent foreign particles like dust and
pathogenic bacteria from entering your body

Temperature control: hair captures the air surrounding your body to
reduce the loss of heat.

Reduces friction, which prevents skin irritation, abrasion and injury

        Promotes touch reception

So there are some arguments for keeping your pubic hair, and it’s likely
that a reduced risk of sexually transmitted infections is one of them. Of
course, the best way to prevent the spread of STDs is to follow safe-sex
practices, or wait to have sex until you’re in a committed relationship.

Then, keep your immune system in tip-top shape,
and it will be better able to fight off any viruses that do come its way. That
said, if you’re in a committed relationship in which the threat of STDs has
been removed, then there is probably little harm in shaving your pubic hair,
if that is your preference. (And there is one potential benefit that we haven’t
discussed: a much lower risk of pubic lice.)

Thank You Dr. Mercola

    Neurologist Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride

recently shared a common thread that may be linking these and other
environmental factors together, namely brain toxicity stemming from gut
toxicity, otherwise known as Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS). She cured
her own son of autism using an all-natural treatment involving dietary
changes and detoxification, and her hypothesis is in my view one of the most
relevant.

In her research, Dr. Campbell-McBride discovered that nearly all of the
mothers of autistic children have abnormal gut flora, which is significant
because newborns inherit their gut flora from their mothers at the time of
birth. Establishing normal gut flora in the first 20 days or so of life plays
a crucial role in the maturation of your baby's immune system. Babies who
develop abnormal gut flora are left with compromised immune systems, putting
them at higher risk for suffering vaccine reactions.

If your baby has suboptimal gut flora, vaccines can become the proverbial
"last straw" — the trigger that "primes" his/her immune system to develop
chronic heath problems.

How to Prevent GAPS

In short, there is a close connection between abnormal gut flora and
abnormal brain development — a condition Dr. Campbell-McBride calls Gut and
Psychology Syndrome (GAPS). The best way to prevent GAPS is for the mother to
avoid all antibiotics and birth control pills prior to conception and then by
breastfeeding and avoiding the use of antibiotics during (intrapartum) and
after delivering. This is because they destroy the balance of gut flora and
promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Fortunately, it's possible to rather inexpensively identify GAPS within
the first weeks of your baby's life, which can help you make better-informed
decisions about vaccinations, and about how to proceed to set your child on
the path to a healthy life.

The entire process for identifying children who would be at risk for
developing autism from a vaccine is described in her book Gut and Psychology
Syndrome, but to sum it up, in her practice she starts out by collecting a
complete health history of the parents, and their gut health is assessed.

Then, within the first few days of life, the stool of the child can be
analyzed to determine the state of her gut flora, followed by a urine test to
check for metabolites, which can give you a picture of the state of your
child's immune system.

These tests are available in most laboratories around the world and cost
a very reasonable amount, about $80 to $100 per test -- peanuts compared to
the incredible expense of treating an autistic child once the damage is done.
In my view, it is absolutely VITAL to perform this analysis BEFORE you
consider vaccinating your child. If the test results are normal the
likelihood of autism after vaccines is dramatically reduced. As Dr.
Campbell-McBride states, she has yet to find an autistic child with normal
bowel flora. If you find that your baby has abnormal gut microflora, or
begins to develop symptoms of autism a year or two later, the GAPS program
should be started immediately, as the younger the child is when you start the
treatment, the better the results. The child should not be given any vaccines
until their microflora tests normal; that is, assuming you choose to
vaccinate at all.

If you want to know what is “normal” behavior for a developing child, and
what may indicate signs of autism or another delay, the CDC has a milestone
chart online for ages two months to five years.6

Reducing Your Child’s Toxic Burden is Crucial to Preventing Chronic Diseases

Like Autism

Autism is a complex condition with many contributing factors and it takes
a multi-faceted approach to treat it. We're now also beginning to understand
it requires a multi-faceted approach to prevent it. This includes avoiding as
many dangerous chemicals as possible, which makes listing the do's and don'ts
virtually impossible. As a general rule, eating whole organic foods will go a
long way, as that automatically cuts out processed foods and related
chemicals, genetically engineered foods and artificial sweeteners.

Also be careful with the personal care products you use, as well as your
household cleaning products and home building materials and furnishings ...
Opting for "green" and/or organic alternatives will help reduce many of the
toxins most people encounter on a daily basis. Do whatever you can to
establish a toxin-free environment for your whole family, and then establish
a detoxification program. Please remember hidden toxins like mold and
fluoride. The book Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call, by Dr. Doris Rapp, is an
excellent resource if you're unsure of how or where to start. Other helpful
tips for tackling autism include:

Lower the EMF burden in your home, especially in your bedrooms.

Carefully review the vaccination issue, including the conventional
vaccination schedule, and know that in most US states you still have the
right to opt out of vaccines.

        Avoid pasteurized milk;

it's an absolute imperative to the treatmentof autism. Those managing this
illness without restricting milk are deceivingthemselves. This includes all
milk products, such as ice cream, yogurt andwhey. Even natural flavorings
in food must be avoided unless the processorcan guarantee that caseinate is
not included.

        Completely eliminating

sugar/fructose, juice, soda, French fries andwheat (pasta, bagels, cereal, pretzels,
etc.) is also highly recommended.

        Get proper sun exposure.

It is my personal belief that vitamin Ddeficiency in conjunction with damaged
gut flora may be two of the most significant contributing factors to autism.
Optimizing your vitamin D levelsand your gut flora during pregnancy may be
the most important preventionstrategies discovered to date.

Tell the White House It’s Time to Take Action Against Autism

Today the autism rates are one in 50. What are we waiting for to start
looking for real answers about this devastating condition? For rates to rise
to one in 30 or one in 15?

We must tackle this problem from all angles, and the Autism Action

Network has launched a campaign urging the US government to finally take
action against autism. You can join in via this Take Action Link to send an
email to the President, your two United States Senators and your member of
the House, letting them know that it’s time to acknowledge there’s a problem
and start taking the autism epidemic seriously.

Autism......

It’s official. Even the conservative US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states the latest stats show one in 50 US kids now has autism.

This is a startling increase from their 2007 data, which showed one in 88 children with the condition. Boys are also four times as likely to be diagnosed with autism as girls, according to the new data. The CDC attributed the steep increase on improved diagnoses, particularly in older kids, noting:

“Children who were first diagnosed in or after 2008 accounted for much of the observed prevalence increase among school-aged children (those aged 6–17).”

Even if this is true (and this is the same rationale they used to explain the last noted increase), the deeper implications behind this rising trend are being downplayed by the media, or worse, entirely ignored. The latest statistics mean that between 3-4 percent of US boys now have autism, and the rate is growing …

Consider that about 15 years ago, 1 in 10,000 kids had autism. Ten years ago it was 1 in 1,000, then 1 in 150, 1 in 88 and now 1 in 50.1 This means there’s one child with autism on just about every school bus (one school bus holds about 50 kids).  This is beyond tragic and a shocking testimony to the accumulated insults that our modern health care system and lifestyle have on the developing fetus.

Are Genes Really to Blame for Autism?

It’s long been known that boys have a greater risk for developing autism than girls, a trend that’s often blamed on mutations in genes on the X chromosome, which only affect boys.

Some have even gone so far as to say that genetics account for 90 percent of a child's risk for autism. However, research from Stanford University using identical twins suggested otherwise.2

Since identical twins share nearly the same DNA, if there were an important genetic component to autism, then if one identical twin has autism, so should their identical sibling in the vast majority of cases.

But, when researchers completed diagnostic assessments on 192 twin pairs, they found fraternal twins were more likely to share an autism diagnosis than identical twins. Fraternal twins share only 50 percent of their DNA, which means something else is probably responsible for the double diagnosis -- and researchers suspect environmental factors are likely to blame.

The majority of autism cases do appear to result from the activation, or "expression," of a number of different genes, along with multiple epigenetic and environmental factors that interact to produce the traits of autism.

What Environmental Factors are Linked to Autism?

Science is increasingly showing us just how malleable our genes are — they continuously respond to their environment, meaning, your body and everything you put into and onto it. The possible environmental factors for autism are incredibly diverse. The following is just a short list of examples:

        Vitamin D Deficiency:

This is a simple and inexpensive factor to eliminate. It is simply inexcusable to be vitamin D deficient when you are pregnant. There is also a link between rampant vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and the proportionate jump in autism, which has been highlighted by Dr. John Cannell.3 The vitamin D receptor appears in a wide variety of brain tissue early in the fetal development, and activated vitamin D receptors increase nerve growth in your brain. You can only imagine what happens to the fragile, developing nervous system of an infant or young child if insufficient vitamin D is present to support neurodevelopment.

        Electromagnetic fields:

Work by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt suggests there are distinct correlations between a woman's exposure to electromagnetic fields during pregnancy and her child's neurological functioning. He found that if you sleep in strong electromagnetic fields during pregnancy, your child will likely begin to exhibit neurological abnormalities within the first two years of life, such as neurological dysfunction, hyperactivity, and learning disorders.

In 2007, this theory received additional support from a study published in the Journal of the Australasian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine.4 It presented the theory that electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi devices and other similar wireless technologies may work in conjunction with genetic and environmental factors, becoming an accelerating factor in autism.

After more than five years of research on children with autism they found that EMR negatively affects cell membranes, encouraging heavy metal toxins, which are associated with autism, to build up.

        Mercury toxicity:

It is already an established fact that exposure to mercury can cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions -- all similar to traits defining, or associated with autism. Mercury pollution is widespread from the burning of fossil fuels, but the use of thimerosal-containing vaccines (still used in annual flu shots) and dental amalgams — both of which contain mercury — also cannot be overlooked as major sources of individual exposure to this neurotoxin.

        Vaccines:

A 2011 review of the peer-reviewed published studies on autism (going all the way back to 1943) revealed numerous documented cases of autism caused by encephalitis following vaccination.5 There are many potential vaccine-related culprits, including the use of toxic adjuvants, the presence of human DNA in vaccines, and the increasing number of vaccines given in a short period of time, any one of which could induce autoantibodies to be formed that may attack self-structures such as the myelin that coats the nerves, disrupting neurological development and function.

        Phthalates:

Research from 2009 discovered that infants who lived in homes with vinyl floors were twice as likely to have autism five years later, compared to those with wood or linoleum flooring. Vinyl floors can emit chemicals called phthalates, which are widely used plastic softeners found in much more than just vinyl flooring. Hairsprays, perfumes, cosmetics, toys, shower curtains, wood finishers, lubricants, certain medical devices and more all contain phthalates. Researchers have suggested the chemicals may contribute to autism by disrupting hormones not only in small children but also in the womb.

Too Little Sleep Wreaks Havoc on Your Insulin Levels, Leads to Food Cravings

Sleep deprivation tends to lead to food cravings, particularly for sweet and starchy foods. Researchers have suggested that these sugar cravings stem from the fact that your brain is fueled by glucose (blood sugar); therefore, when lack of sleep occurs, and your brain is unable to properly respond to insulin (which drives glucose into brain cells) your brain becomes desperate for carbohydrates to keep going. If you're chronically sleep deprived, consistently giving in to these sugar cravings will virtually guarantee that you'll gain weight.

Getting too little sleep also dramatically decreases the sensitivity of your insulin receptors, which will raise your insulin levels. This too is a surefire way to gain weight, as the elevated insulin will seriously impair your body's ability to burn and digest fat.

According to research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine,7 after four nights of sleep deprivation (sleep time was only 4.5 hours per night), study participants' insulin sensitivity was 16 percent lower, while their fat cells' insulin sensitivity was 30 percent lower, and rivaled levels seen in those with diabetes or obesity.

Sleep Deprivation Linked to Psychiatric Disorders

Getting back to the link between sleep, or lack of it, and mood, sleep deprivation is linked to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and bipolar depression, while getting the right amount of sleep has been linked to positive personality characteristics such as optimism and greater self-esteem, as well as a greater ability to solve difficult problems.8

So there’s no doubt about it: too little sleep can seriously impact your mood and your ability to be happy. If you feel well-rested in the morning, that's a good sign that your sleep habits are just fine. But if not, you might want to investigate your sleep patterns more closely.

10 Reasons Why You Might Have Trouble Sleeping

There are many factors that can influence your sleep. For my complete recommendations and guidelines that can help you improve your sleep, please see my article 33 Secrets to a Good Night's Sleep. Following are 10 often-overlooked factors to address if you’re having trouble with your sleep:

Too Much Light in Your Room

Even the tiniest bit of light in the room, including those emitted by electronic devices, can disrupt your pineal gland's production of melatonin and serotonin, thereby disrupting your sleep cycle.

So close your bedroom door, install black-out drapes, use a sleep mask, get rid of night-lights, and refrain from turning on any light during the night, even when getting up to go to the bathroom. If you have to use a light you can use a red flashlight, as that wavelength of light has a minimal impact on melatonin production.

        Exercising Too Close to Bedtime

Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day can improve your sleep. However, don't exercise too close to bedtime (generally not within the three hours before) or it may keep you awake.

        Drinking Alcohol Before Bed

Although alcohol will make you drowsy, the effect is short lived and you will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol can also keep you from entering the deeper stages of sleep, where your body does most of its healing.

        Your Bedroom is Too Warm

Many people keep their homes and particularly their upstairs bedrooms too warm. Studies show that the optimal room temperature for sleep is quite cool, between 60 to 68 degrees F. Keeping your room cooler or hotter can lead to restless sleep. When you sleep, your body's internal temperature drops to its lowest level, generally about four hours after you fall asleep.

Scientists believe a cooler bedroom may therefore be most conducive to sleep, since it mimics your body's natural temperature drop.

        Caffeine is Keeping You Awake

Caffeine has a half-life of five hours, which means some will still be in your system even 10 hours later, and 12.5% 20 hours later (see the problem?). Plus, in some people caffeine is not metabolized efficiently, leaving you feeling its effects even longer after consumption. So, an afternoon cup of coffee or tea will keep some people from falling asleep at night. Be aware that some over the counter medications contain caffeine as well (for example, diet pills).

        You're Watching the Clock

The more you watch the clock when you wake up in the middle of the night, the more stressed and anxious you will become, and the more you may actually "train" yourself to start awakening at the same time each night. The solution is simple: Remove the clock from your view so you actually have to sit up or change positions to see the clock.

Watching TV to Help You Fall Asleep

The artificial glow from your TV can serve as a stimulus for keeping you awake and, possibly, eating, when you should really be asleep. Further, computer and TV screens (and most light bulbs) emit blue light, to which your eyes are particularly sensitive simply because it's the type of light most common outdoors during daytime hours. As a result, it can disrupt your melatonin production and further interfere with your sleep.

Worrying in the Middle of the Night

If stress keeps you up at night, try keeping a "worry journal" next to your bedside so you can jot down your thoughts there and clear them from your head. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can also help balance your body's bioenergy system and resolve some of the emotional stresses that are contributing to your insomnia at a very deep level. The results are typically long lasting and improvement is remarkably rapid.

        Eating Too Close to Bedtime

Although you might struggle with this initially, it is ideal to avoid eating any foods three hours before bed, as this will optimize your blood sugar, insulin and leptin levels and contribute to overall good health.
        Smoking

The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant, which can keep you awake much as though you just drank a cup of coffee.

Sleeping Problems

The brain chemical hypocretin, a neurotransmitter that helps keep you awake, is most widely known for its role in the sleeping disorder known as narcolepsy.

Narcoleptics, who uncontrollably fall asleep during the day and have much higher rates of depression than the general population, are unable to produce hypocretin. This not only interferes with their sleep-wake cycle, but also may also disrupt their emotional state – a new finding that has implications for everyone.

Hypocretin May Regulate Your Levels of Happiness

A new study, which used epilepsy patients who had special electrodes implanted in their brains that could monitor hypocretin levels, found that levels of the neurotransmitter soared during positive emotions, anger, social interactions and upon awakening.1

Hypocretin has been previously associated with reward-seeking behaviors, and the researchers suggested it may have a very specific role in human arousal and happiness as well. The study’s lead author, Dr. Jerome Siegel, told the New York Times:2

“This [study] shows that hypocretin is related to a particular kind of arousal … There is an arousal system in the brain whose function is keeping you awake for pleasure, to get rewards. It is related to positive effects, and in its absence you have a deficit in pleasure seeking.”

This explains why people with narcolepsy, who are lacking hypocretin, also commonly suffer from depression. Interestingly, it also suggests there may be other arousal systems in your brain, driven by different brain chemicals, that may be in charge of regulating other specific emotions.

A Warning About Hypocretin-Blocking Sleeping Pills

If an important new biological pathway is discovered you can bet your bottom dollar that the drug companies will not be far behind to manipulate that pathway in some way that will not correct the problem, but merely relieve the symptoms and make them a boatload of money. And that is precisely what has happened.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted a new drug application for Suvorexant, a new insomnia medication made by Merck.3 This is the same company that brought you Vioxx, which killed 60,000 before being pulled from the market.

The new drug works by targeting hypocretin, temporarily blocking it to help you fall asleep, or, as the New York Times put it, “essentially causing narcolepsy for a night.”4

The concern is that if reduced hypocretin may be responsible for causing depression in narcoleptics, could it also cause depression, or interfere with mood, in healthy people using the hypocretin-blocking drug Suvorexant? So far Merck claims no connection has been found, but there is likely reason for caution:5

“The initial reports are rosy,” Dr. Siegel told the New York Times, “But they come from a drug company with an enormous investment. And there is a long list of drugs acting on the brain whose severe problems were only identified after millions of people were taking them.”

More Proof Lack of "Sleep" Leads to Weight Gain

Research has only scratched the surface of the far-reaching implications of a disrupted sleep-wake cycle. But in addition to impacting your emotions, it’s known that a lack of sleep causes changes in the hunger and satiety hormones ghrelin and leptin – changes that impact your food intake and ultimately your weight.

The latest research showed the effects of sleeping just five hours a night for five days. The study participants actually burned more energy than those who slept longer, but they had less restraint when it came to mealtime. The sleep-deprived subjects ended up eating more, so that despite their increased energy burning they gained nearly two pounds, on average, during the five-day study.6

    Researchers noted:

“Our findings suggest that increased food intake during insufficient sleep is a physiological adaptation to provide energy needed to sustain additional wakefulness; yet when food is easily accessible, intake surpasses that needed … These findings provide evidence that sleep plays a key role in energy metabolism. Importantly, they demonstrate physiological and behavioral mechanisms by which insufficient sleep may contribute to overweight and obesity.”

The good news is that the opposite also held true: when participants started getting more sleep, they subsequently started to eat less and lose weight.

Freshwater in Increasingly Short Supply

While it may seem unthinkable to some, especially Westerners, freshwater supplies are dwindling across the globe, making protecting drinking water supplies all the more critical—be it from agricultural or industry pollution, or any other source of contamination. According to a recent article in Scientific American,8 the combined water use by US agriculture, industry and population exceeds all the water flowing in the nation’s rivers. The remainder is supplied from groundwater aquifers, which are receding at a faster pace than being replenished. Financial products innovator Richard Sandor predicts water (both quantity and quality) may soon be traded as goods. Needless to say, at that point, those who cannot pay will not get any...

In light of that, it seems irresponsible to allow shale fracking operations to blast toxic chemicals into the earth that can then contaminate groundwater supplies. Fines and payouts to victims who successfully sue will not protect our water supplies. Only stopping the fracking will. According to water-contamination-from-shale.com:9

“The major concern with shale gas drilling is the chemicals used in the process".

Because the federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempted hydraulic fracturing from regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act, shale gas drillers don’t have to disclose what chemicals they use.

A study conducted by Theo Colburn, PhD, the director of the Endocrine Disruption Exchange in Paonia, Colorado, has so far identified 65 chemicals that are probable components of the fracking fluids used by shale gas drillers. These chemicals included benzene, glycol-ethers, toluene, 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethanol, and nonylphenols. All of these chemicals have been linked to health disorders when human exposure is too high.

Concerns are growing that many of the chemicals used in shale gas drilling are seeping into groundwater. While some of the injection fluid used in the process comes back to the surface, 30 to 40 percent is never recovered, according to the industry’s own estimates.”

Improper disposal of waste water from fracking operations have also been noted. In 2011, natural gas drillers in Pennsylvania were found to have shipped toxic and radioactive hydraulic fracking waste water to sewage treatment plants that were not properly equipped to treat it. From there, it was dispersed into rivers and streams which provide drinking water to millions of people.

What's the Best Option for Safe, Pure Water?

There’s no doubt about it: Safe, pure water is becoming increasingly difficult to come by, even in otherwise affluent, developed nations. For most people, regardless of where you live, purifying the water you drink is more a necessity than a choice. By this I do NOT mean resorting to bottled water from your supermarket. Bottled water is typically nothing more than bottled tap water that may or may not have received additional filtration, and the federal testing requirements for bottled water are actually more lax than those for communal water supplies.

One of the best alternatives to the tap may be finding a gravity-fed raw spring in your area—barring contamination from nearby agriculture or fracking operations, that is. Fortunately, natural springs are often monitored by the local municipalities for contaminants.

Natural spring water is naturally filtered by the earth and is "living water," in the same way that raw food is "living food," which is why it's some of the most healthful water on the planet. Before you dismiss this idea because you think there are no such springs in your neck of the woods, there is a Web site called FindaSpring.com10 that can help you locate springs in your area.

The next best option is to filter the water that comes out of your tap, but there are benefits and drawbacks to virtually every water filtration system on the market. Currently I use a whole house carbon-based water filtration system. Prior to this I used reverse osmosis (RO) to purify my water. This previous article can help you make a decision about the type of water filtration system that would be best for you and your family. Since most water sources are now severely polluted, the issue of water filtration and purification couldn't be more important.

As noted in the featured article:

“Finance specialists" have not been taken in.

'The economics of fracking are horrid,' writes US financial journalist
Wolf Richter in Business Insider. 'Drilling is destroying capital at an
astonishing rate, and drillers are left with a mountain of debt just when
decline rates are starting to wreak their havoc. To keep the decline rates
from mucking up income statements, companies had to drill more and
more, with new wells making up for the declining production of old wells.
Alas, the scheme hit a wall, namely reality.'”

According to financial analyst John Dizard, producers of shale gas have
borrowed large amounts of money just to fund the initial land acquisition
drilling. Operating under “deficit financing,” they’ve spent two to five
times their operating cash flow just to get started, and with production
dropping off at a staggering rate, these producers quickly find themselves
operating in the red.

What it all amounts to is an “oil bubble” that could rival the recent
bank bailouts. The question is where is the bailout money for the oil and gas
industry going to come from? Worse yet, depending on how far the bubble is
allowed to expand and how many new wells are drilled to maintain even
production, the environment could be absolutely decimated in the process of
trying to avert what appears to be an inevitable financial cataclysm...

Unsealed Records in Pennsylvania Fracking Case Reveals Contamination Problems

A lawsuit recently unsealed in the Washington County Court of Common
Pleas reveals the health hazards associated with the fracking process, and
how revolving doors between industry and agencies tasked to investigate
wrongdoing places your health a distant second to industry profits. According
to stateimpact.npr.org:5

“The Hallowich family sued the gas drillers after they say nearby
drilling activity, including compressor stations, made their children sick.

The mother, Stephanie Hallowich

became an outspoken critic of gas drilling inthe Marcellus Shale. But the
final settlement imposed a strict gag order onthe Hallowich family, as well
as the gas drilling companies. The Hallowichfamily has since moved from
their home.”

The drilling companies, Range Resources, MarkWest Energy and Williams
Gas, settled the contamination case for $750,000, according to recently
unsealed records, of which the Hallowich children receive $10,000 each. The
order to unseal the records was entered on March 20, reversing a previous
decision to have them permanently sealed. According to the judge, claims of
privacy rights on behalf of the drillers had no merit. The records are now
posted in full on the NPR site.6

The records show that the fracking activities

had leaked acetone into fresh water supplies, and the Pennsylvania Department
of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspector tasked with investigating
complaints about the water contamination went on to work for the drilling
company, Range Resources. Not surprisingly, complaint files at the DEP
were subsequently found to be missing...

The Hallowich’s drinking water was found to be contaminated with
acrylonitrile above “safe” levels, a highly flammable and toxic chemical
compound classified as a probable carcinogen. The Hallowich's also claimed
air emissions from the gas processing plant made them sick. However, as part
of the settlement, the Hallowich's signed an affidavit stating there’s "no
medical evidence" that their children's symptoms are "definitively" connected
to drilling activity.

Is Fracking Really Safe for the Environment and Residents of the Area?

Fracking proponents claim it is a safe and effective drilling method that
reduces the surface footprint of the drilling operation. However, people
across the US have reported serious adverse health events resulting from
contamination of air and/or drinking water.

The method entails pumping chemical-laced water and sand at high pressure
into shale rock formation, thereby releasing hydrocarbons. The chemicals used
in the process have the potential to leak into nearby groundwater, as they
did in the Pennsylvania case above, either from the well, or from spills
above ground. Yet another concern is fracking-induced earthquakes. Reported
adverse effects of exposure to fracking chemicals include:

                Respiratory ailments; shortness of breath
                Chemical sensitivities
                Skin rashes; swelling; lesions
                Severe headaches
                Nausea and vomiting

One of the Dangerous Hushed Risks Behind America's Economic Boom

How the New American “Oil Boom” Might Destroy the Environment

and Decimate the Health of Millions

Recent headlines in the American press would have you believe we’re in
for a robust economic boom, courtesy of the new shale gas revolution. Some
forecasters claim the US will outstrip Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest
oil producer by 2017, effectively rendering the US self-sufficient in terms
of energy production.

But are we really “swimming in oil”? And is the shale revolution really
the answer to all our energy and economic problems?

In pictures and words, three different publications tell the story, while
EPA documents add a twist as to how wetlands should be protected through all
this, but aren’t.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed Executive Order No. 11990 for the
protection of wetlands,1 which prohibits anyone, including farmers, from
altering wetlands in any way.

As a result of that legislation farmers are unable to touch wetlands
without fear of federal prosecution, which can at times put extreme limits on
their farming protocols due to the stringent way wetlands are defined.

Sometimes a simple puddle in a farmer’s field can be defined as a wetland.

Conversely, oil companies now come in and wipe out huge tracts of
wetlands without any repercussions at all, showing that, apparently, wetland
protection loses its importance when oil company profits are at stake.

The Great Oil Swindle

As reported in The Atlantic,2 the Bakken shale situated in North Dakota
holds an estimated 18 billion barrels of crude oil. Originally discovered in
1951, the oil was too expensive to extract at the time, as it’s embedded in
the rock.

That all changed in 2008 when hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," became
widely available. Since then, North Dakota has experienced a massive oil
drilling boom, and as of this year, the state has more than 200 active oil
rigs producing about 20 million barrels of oil per month.

The oil business has dramatically altered the state’s landscape, and
pictures3 show big fracking sites now located right next to private homes and
farms, and as revealed in the PBS special above, having a fracking operation
on your land can be devastating to your health...

Another article in Le Monde Diplomatique4 highlights the environmental
destruction that accompanies oil and natural gas fracking, and also questions
whether the fracking boom is little more than another bubble—“a temporary
recovery that masks deep structural instability”:

“These resources can only be mined at the cost of massive
environmental pollution: their extraction involves hydraulic fracturing...
using the technique of horizontal drilling... But their exploitation in the
US has brought about the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and offers
the advantage of cheap and abundant energy...

But is the shale revolution all it’s fracked up to be?

The ongoing fragility of the global economy should give pause for
thought... But policymakers have learnt few lessons from the 2008 crash, and
may be on course to repeat similar mistakes in the petroleum sector.

A New York Times investigation first unearthed major cracks in
the 'shale boom' narrative in June 2011, finding that state geologists,
industry lawyers and market analysts 'privately' questioned 'whether
companies are intentionally, and even illegally, overstating the productivity
of their wells and the size of their reserves.'

According to the paper, 'the gas may not be as easy and cheap to
extract from shale formations deep underground as the companies are saying,
according to hundreds of industry e-mails and internal documents and an
analysis of data from thousands of wells.'”

Two US energy consultants reportedly sounded the alarm at the beginning
of 2012 with an article in the British energy industry journal Petroleum
Review. They wrote that there’s a “basis for reasonable doubts about the
reliability and durability of US shale gas reserves.” They claim the reserves
have been “inflated” under new Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules
that allow gas companies to make claims about the size of the reserve without
an independent third party audit. This overestimation of reserves can hide
lack of profitability.

According to former UK chief government scientist Sir David King,
production at wells tends to drop off by 60-90 percent within the first year
of production alone, and petroleum geologist Arthur Berman has noted that the
annual decline in production exceeds 42 percent. All in all, this makes
drilling for shale gas extremely unprofitable...

Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Four Additional Risk Factors for Heart Disease

You’ll notice that none of these involve your cholesterol levels …

Your fasting insulin level: Any meal or snack high in carbohydrates
like fructose and refined grains generates a rapid rise in blood glucose and
then insulin to compensate for the rise in blood sugar. The insulin released
from eating too many carbs promotes fat and makes it more difficult for your
body to shed excess weight, and excess fat, particularly around your belly,
this is one of the major contributors to heart disease.

Your fasting insulin level can be determined by a simple, inexpensive
blood test. A normal fasting blood insulin level is below 5, but ideally
you'll want it below 3. If your insulin level is higher than 3 to 5, the most
effective way to optimize it is to reduce or eliminate all forms of dietary
sugar, particularly fructose, from your diet.

Your fasting blood sugar level: Studies have shown that people with a
fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dl had a nearly 300 percent higher
risk of having coronary heart disease than people with a level below 79
mg/dl.

Your waist circumference: Visceral fat, the type of fat that collects
around your internal organs, is a well-recognized risk factor for heart
disease. The simplest way to evaluate your risk here is by simply measuring
your waist circumference. For further instructions, please see my previous
article, Your Waist Size Can Be a Powerful Predictor of Hypertension and

Other Chronic Diseases.

Your iron level: Iron can be a very potent cause of oxidative stress,
so if you have excess iron levels you can damage your blood vessels and
increase your risk of heart disease. Ideally, you should monitor your
ferritin levels and make sure they are not much above 80 ng/ml. The simplest
way to lower them if they are elevated is to donate your blood. If that is
not possible you can have a therapeutic phlebotomy and that will effectively
eliminate the excess iron from your body.

Diet Can Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attacks Better Than Statins

According to Dr. Barbara Roberts, author of The Truth About Statins,
studies haven’t shown that statins are beneficial for women who do not have
heart disease, even if they have risk factors like obesity or family
history.5 Yet, a recent study found heart attacks were reduced by 30 percent
among people eating a Mediterranean diet!6

The healthy eating proved to be just as beneficial, if not more so, than
statin drugs claim to be. While I don’t recommend a Mediterranean diet, per
se, a healthy diet, like the one described in my nutrition plan, is the
cornerstone of any heart-protection “plan.” If you want to protect your heart
health, I recommend reducing, with the plan of eliminating, grains and sugars
(including fructose) in your diet, replacing them with mostly whole, fresh
vegetable carbs and healthy fats. Also try to consume a good portion of your
food raw.

To round out your heart-disease prevention program:

Make sure you are getting enough high-quality, animal-based omega 3
fats, such as krill oil.

Optimize your vitamin D levels, ideally through appropriate sun
exposure as this will allow your body to also create vitamin D sulfate, which
may play a crucial role in preventing the formation of arterial plaque

Exercise daily, especially with Peak Fitness exercises
Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol excessively
Be sure to get plenty of good, restorative sleep

Are You Taking a Statin Drug for No Reason?

That these drugs have proliferated the market the way they have is a
testimony to the effectiveness of direct-to-consumer marketing, corruption
and corporate greed, because the odds are very high — greater than 1000 to 1
— that if you're taking a statin, you don't really need it.

From my review, the ONLY subgroup that might benefit are those born with
a genetic defect called familial hypercholesterolemia, as this makes them
resistant to traditional measures of normalizing cholesterol.

If you’re currently taking a statin drug and are worried about the
excessive side effects they cause, please consult with a knowledgeable health
care practitioner who can help you to optimize your heart health naturally,
without the use of these dangerous drugs.

Statins Might Make Your Heart Health Worse

The biggest “sham” of all is that statin drugs, which millions are taking
as a form of “preventive medicine” to protect their heart health, can have
detrimental effects on your heart. Take a study in the journal

Atherosclerosis,4 which showed that statin use is associated with a 52
percent increased prevalence and extent of calcified coronary plaque compared
to non-users. Coronary artery calcification is the hallmark of potentially
lethal heart disease!

One of the primary mechanisms of harm appears to be CoQ10 depletion. If
you take statin drugs without supplementing with CoQ10 (or ideally, the
reduced form, called ubiquinol, which is far more effective), your health is
at serious risk. CoQ10 is used by every cell in your body, but especially
your heart cells. Cardiac muscle cells have up to 200 times more
mitochondria, and hence 200 times higher CoQ10 requirements, than skeletal
muscle.

Premature aging is yet another side effect of statin drugs, and it's also
a primary side effect of having too little CoQ10. Deficiency in this nutrient
also accelerates DNA damage, and because CoQ10 is beneficial to heart health
and muscle function this depletion leads to fatigue, muscle weakness,
soreness and heart failure.

Measure Your LDL Particle Number, Not Total Cholesterol, to Gauge

Heart Disease Risk

Could it be that all of this focus on lowering cholesterol levels has
missed the boat entirely? Certainly, because cholesterol is NOT the cause of
heart disease. Your body NEEDS cholesterol -- it is important in the
production of cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help
you to digest fat. Cholesterol also helps your brain form memories and is
vital to your neurological function.

If your physician is urging you to check your total cholesterol, know
that this test will tell you virtually nothing about your risk of heart
disease, unless it is 330 or higher. One of the most important tests you can
get to determine your real heart disease risk is the NMR LipoProfile, which
measures your LDL particle number. This test also has other markers that can
help determine if you have insulin resistance, which is a primary cause of
elevated LDL particle number and increased heart disease risk.

The NMR LipoProfile test easy to get and all major labs offer it,
including LabCorp and Quest. Most insurance policies cover the test as well.

Best of all, even if your doctor were to refuse to order it, you can order it
yourself via third-party intermediaries like Direct Labs, or you can order
the test online, and get blood drawn locally. Two other ratios you should pay
attention to:

HDL/Total Cholesterol Ratio: Should ideally be above 24 percent. If
below 10 percent, you have a significantly elevated risk for heart disease.
Triglyceride/HDL Ratio: Should be below 2.
