How to Save Money on Groceries

27 Ways to Make Your Groceries Last as Long as Possible

If you’re like the average American, you waste more than 20 pounds of
food every month. This is because 40 percent of the food in the US goes
uneaten1 – that’s almost half.

While some of this food is lost during production and processing (such as
produce that goes bad before it’s harvested), a significant amount is wasted
in people’s homes simply because it goes bad before it’s eaten.

Wasted Food Costs US Families Thousands of Dollars a Year…
Not only does this amount to more than $2,000 in annual losses for the
average US household of four, but all of that wasted food uses up precious
stores of freshwater – about 25 percent of freshwater use is wasted on food
that’s not even eaten!

Plus, this “throw-away” food takes up land space to grow it (which is
then doused with chemicals) and generates increased methane gas emissions in
landfills when it sits and starts rotting… it’s a massive unnecessary waste
on all fronts.

Of course, you probably don’t set out to waste food. But if you purchase
fresh produce in larger quantities -- a must if you like to eat healthily but
don’t have time to run to the market every day -- it can be difficult to use
it up before it goes bad.

Not surprisingly, these types of healthy fresh foods are the foods most
likely to be wasted. For instance, more fruits and vegetables are wasted in
the U.S. food system than are actually consumed (52% are wasted versus 48%
consumed).

The good news is that there are many tricks you can use to extend the
“shelf-life” of your fresh foods; you don’t need to resign yourself to frozen
or canned alternatives!

How to Make Your Groceries Last Longer: 27 Tips

When you invest the time and money into a trip to the grocery store, you
want to be sure the foods you purchase last as long as possible. The featured
article has compiled more than two-dozen tricks to keep up your sleeve to do
just that:

    Vegetables

Store onions in old pantyhose to keep them fresh for up to eight
months (tie a knot in between each one to keep them separate).

Chop dry green onions and store them in an empty plastic water
bottle. Put the bottle in the freezer and sprinkle out what you need
        when you’re cooking.

When storing potatoes, keep them away from onions (this will make
them spoil faster). Storing them with apples will help keep the potatoes
        from sprouting.

Asparagus should be stored in your fridge upright in a glass of water
(like cut flowers, cut the asparagus bottoms off first), and covered with
       a plastic bag.

Store salad greens in a bowl covered with plastic wrap, and add a
paper towel to help absorb moisture. A salad spinner will also help
remove excess moisture -- a key culprit in wilting leaves -- from your
      greens.

Mushrooms should be stored in a paper bag in a cool dry place, or in
the fridge. Avoid storing mushrooms in plastic, as any trapped moisture
       willcause them to spoil.

    Fruits

Swirl berries in a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider)
to 10 parts water. You won’t taste the vinegar but the solution will help
keep your berries from getting moldy and soft.

When storing chopped avocado or guacamole, leave the pit in, spritz
it with some lemon juice or olive oil, cover with plastic wrap, and put
it in the fridge. This will help keep it from turning brown. If you spot
a rotten apple, remove it right away, as one rotten apple really can
        spoil the whole bunch.

Put plastic wrap around the crown of a bunch of bananas to keep them
fresh for days longer (and be sure to store them away from other fruits,
as they emit a lot of ethylene gas which accelerates ripening).

Store tomatoes at room temperature away from sunlight, in a single
layer with the stem side up (don’t put them in plastic bags, which
will cause them to spoil faster).

    Herbs

Store delicate herbs like parsley, basil, cilantro and chives upright
in a glass of water (like you would arrange cut flowers) in your fridge.
Put a plastic bag over the top and secure it around the glass with a
        rubber band for optimal freshness.

Bunch oily herbs like thyme loosely together, secure them with a
string around the base and hang them in your kitchen for storage.
Fill an ice cube tray with olive oil, then add chopped herbs
(rosemary, sage, thyme or oregano) to each cube. Pop one out
when you’re cooking for instant herb-infused oil.

Store fresh ginger root in the freezer. You can grate it frozen (peel
        and all) when cooking.

    Dairy and Nuts

Rub the cut side of a block of cheese with butter to keep it from
        drying out.

Cheese should be wrapped in cheese paper or wax paper, not plastic
wrap, then put in a plastic baggie.

Store cheese in the warmest part of your fridge, such as the
         vegetable or cheese drawer.

Nuts can be stored in the freezer to keep them fresh longer. Ideally
put them in Mason jars that have the air vacuumed out with a Food
        Saver and attachment.

    Organization, Gadgets and Other Tips

Keep milk and other highly perishable items on the middle shelf in
your fridge, NOT in the door where temperatures fluctuate.

Avoid mixing produce and meats in the same drawer, as cross
contamination can lead to food waste.

Avoid over-stocking your fridge, as a crowded fridge will keep air
from circulating properly leading to warm spots that can cause spoilage.

Avoid chopping up your fruits, veggies and meats before storage, as
this will make them spoil faster.

Glass mason jars make a great food-storage option, and you can seal
them with an automatic vacuum sealer like Food Saver for even more
        freshness.

Remove spoiled food from your fridge promptly to keep mold from
       transferring to fresh food.

Get an ethylene gas absorber for your fridge; they’re available
online and can keep your produce fresh up to three times longer
        than normal.

There are many types of bags that can do this. They are typically called
“green bags.” One example would be Debbie Meyer Green Bags.

A gadget called the Herb Savor, which has a well for water and a
plastic cover to keep herbs fresh, claims to make herbs last for up
        to three weeks.

Vacuum Packing: One of My Favorite Food-Storage Tips

One of my all-time favorite tricks, which works for most produce, is to
create a "vacuum pack" to help protect it from oxygen and airborne microbes
that will accelerate its decay. Leave the produce in the bag it came in from
the grocery store, place it against your chest and use your arm to squeeze
the excess air out of the bag.

Once the air is removed you can seal it with a twist tie and thus
minimize exposure to oxygen. This simple technique can easily double or
triple the normal shelf life of your vegetables by keeping air away from
them. Alternatively, you can use an automatic vacuum sealer, like the
FoodSaver available on Amazon, to do this automatically and create an even
tighter, airtight seal.

However, I nearly always store my food in quart or pint glass Ball jars.

The FoodSaver brand also has a wide-mouth jar sealer attachment, which is
ideal for sealing your leftovers, fermented veggies, sauces and other liquids
stored in a wide-mouth jar, and can keep your food fresh up to five times
longer. I regularly use it for extending the life of my vegetable juice and
making my juicing more efficient so I don’t have to juice every day.

Is There Medical Negligence in our Medical System

“If you don’t know of a nurse, secretary, doctor, or technician that
works for a hospital that can give you this scoop on who’s really good, ask
some of these important questions.”

Dr. Makary suggests “For surgery, ask the following questions:

Do I really need this done?
When am I going to be back to feeling good?
What if I don’t have this procedure done?
Can I wait a year and see if this gets better?
What if I wait and then something develops in the interim?

How do we handle it that at that point and what are the odds of success then versus  now?

There’s a movement – a revolution – that we described in the book
Unaccountable, which is starting to provide useful information on websites,
so that patients can navigate the healthcare system.”

Safeguarding Your Care While Hospitalized

Once you’re hospitalized, you’re immediately at risk for medical errors,
so one of the best safeguards is to have someone there with you. Dr. Andrew
Saul has written an entire book on the issue of safeguarding your health
while hospitalized. Frequently, you’re going to be relatively debilitated,
especially post-op when you’re under the influence of anesthesia, and you
won’t have the opportunity to see the types of processes that are going on.

Dr. Makary agrees it’s important to have someone there to act as your
personal advocate, or to take the time to stay with your loved one who is
hospitalized. This is particularly important for pediatric patients, and the
elderly.

“Sometimes, we rely on a competent talking patient to help verify
what we’re doing before we go in the operating room. But if we got somebody
who’s not mentally coherent because they’re elderly or a kid and there’s no
family member around, these are danger zones. These are high-risk areas for
medical mistakes,” Dr. Makary warns.

“It’s important to ask what procedure’s being done or why is the
procedure being done. 'Can I talk to the doctor?' You have a right to know
about what’s being done to you or your loved one in the hospital. When you’ve
got a kid in the hospital, I think it’s particularly important to ask the
questions.”

For every medication given in the hospital, ask, “What is this
medication? What is it for? What’s the dose?” Take notes. Ask questions.
Building a relationship with the nurses can go a long way. Also, when they
realize they’re going to be questioned, they’re more likely to go through
that extra step of due diligence to make sure they’re getting it right—that’s
human nature.

Pushing for Greater Transparency in Healthcare

The issue of transparency is a big focus of Dr. Makary’s book,
Unaccountable. In it, he discusses a number of ways transparency can be
improved, not only from an organization-hospital perspective, but also from
an individual position perspective.

We now have a lot of data metrics to measure healthcare quality, such as
different hospital’s infection rates, re-admission rates, patient
satisfaction scores, and surgical complication rates. According to Dr.
Makary, the ways to measure hospital performance are now maturing to the
point where they need to be available to the public, and he’s seeing a
“transparency revolution” starting to take place.

“I believe it’s going to reshape our entire healthcare landscape,” he
says. “Instead of choosing a hospital based on a billboard advertisement or
valet parking at a hospital, you should be able to look up a hospital’s
performance – their quality, their volumes, and their satisfaction [rate].
You know, 60 percent of New Yorkers will look up a restaurant’s ratings
before choosing a restaurant. Yet people are walking into the hospitals blind
to the hospital’s performance. We’re seeing an exciting revolution now in
healthcare. It’s a transparency revolution, and it’s really why I wrote this
book, Unaccountable.”

Help for Victims of Preventable Medical Errors

Part of the nature of being human is that we make mistakes. No one is
perfect. Mistakes will be made. And with more transparency, these mistakes
will be known. So, what can you do should you find yourself a victim of a
preventable medical mistake? Dr. Makary suggests connecting with patient
communities like:

        Citizens for Patient Safety6
        ProPublica Patient Harm7

    Besides that, he suggests:

“Ask to talk to the doctor about that mistake. If you’re not
satisfied, write a letter or call the patient relations department. Every
hospital is mandated to have this service. They are set up to answer your
concerns. If you’re not satisfied with that, write a letter to the hospital’s
lawyer, the general council. And you will see attention to the issue, because
you’ve gone through the right channels.

We don’t want to encourage millions of lawsuits out there. But you
know, when people voice what happened, what went wrong, and the nature of the
preventable mistake, hospitals can learn from their mistakes. Sometimes
they’re taking a lot of attention now to prevent mistakes from happening
again. You should let that mistake be known.”

Thank You  Dr. Mercola

Unnecessary Medical Procedures Along With Medical Nnegligence

Unnecessary Medical Procedures Along With Medical Nnegligence

Helping Patients and Doctors Choose Wisely

For the past two years, the American Board of Internal Medicine
Foundation, one of the largest physician organizations in the US, has
released reports on the most overused tests and treatments that provide
limited or no benefit to the patient, or worse, causes more harm than good.

Last year’s report warned doctors against using 45 tests, procedures and
treatments. This year, another 90 tests and treatments were added to the
list. To learn more, I encourage you to browse through the Choosing Wisely
web site,4 as they provide informative reports on a wide variety of medical
specialties, tests, and procedures that may not be in your best interest. As
reported by NPR:5

“The idea is to curb unnecessary, wasteful and often harmful care,
its sponsors say — not to ration care. As one foundation official pointed out
last year, rationing is denial of care that patients need, while the Choosing
Wisely campaign aims to reduce care that has no value.”

Unfortunately, it seems matters will only get worse with the passage of
the Affordable Care Act because it’s just a continuation of the same broken
process. I agree that people should be covered under health insurance, but
they should be covered with appropriate care; not care that perpetuates the
same problems addressed in Dr. Makary’s book.

“What we’ve got to do is educate the everyday patient to empower
themselves, to understand what they’re having done, and to learn to ask the
right questions,” he says. “We’ve put together a list of sort of important
questions a patient should ask, and we’ve put it on the book website,

Your Solution For Disease FREE Health.

  http://bit.ly/RGNZ0i

UnaccountableBook.com.

Things like: 'Do I really need to have this done? What if I don’t
take this medication? And then, whatever that consequence could be, what are
the odds that that could happen? And if it does happen, can we treat it once
that happens?'

I remember consenting people for surgery as a resident. I was way
over my head. They would ask me, 'What happens if I don’t have an operation
or take a medicine?' And I just give them a standard answer sometimes. 'You
could die. Something could go wrong.' And yet, I was rushing. You’re working
sometimes for 40 straight hours; you’re working 120 hours a week. As a
resident, you’ve got a mission. You get certain things done to get through
this little list of things you need to do during the day... Research now
shows that most patients are under-informed about the risks of medical tests,
procedures and medications, and the benefits are overstated.”

On Referrals, and...

According to Dr. Makary, under-referral is another major issue that leads
to improper medical treatment. Some doctors will simply declare that “nothing
can be done,” without realizing a specialist may have an entirely different
set of tools at their disposal. There are even “micro-specialists” out there
specializing in a tiny area within a particular field of medicine. The trick
is to find them.

World's #1 Publisher of Information About Alternative Cancer Treatments

  http://bit.ly/ZVR6Qw

“There are probably not enough referrals to specialists as there
should be. I think sometimes you need to take things in your own hand and
just ask for one. Or say, you know, 'Would it help if I spoke with someone
who specializes in this?' Or go to their websites and find the experts. There
are some very good websites out there now for patients, [like]
ConsumerReportHealth.org. Medicare is now putting a lot of hospital
performance up on the web in their website Hospital Compare. It’s
HospitalCompare.hhs.gov. So, there are some good resources out there now.”

Dr. Makary suggests asking an emergency room nurse for their
recommendations for specialists and doctors well-versed in a particular
ailment. Another helpful strategy can be to ask around for alternative
practitioners or treatment options. Your local health food store can be a
good place to start.

Unnecessary Medical Procedures Along With Medical Nnegligence

 Continued From Last Post

Unnecessary Treatment is a Massive Problem

According to a report by the Institute of Medicine, an estimated 30 percent of all medical procedures, tests and medications may in fact be unnecessary – at a cost of at least $750 billion a year (plus the cost of emotional suffering and related complications and even death – which are impossible to put numbers on). While overuse and misuse have become a deeply ingrained part of the culture of medicine, there are hopeful signs that things are starting to change. Dr. Makary points out a number of standard blanket recommendations that have been changed in recent years, such as daily aspirin regimen, PSA testing, and annual mammograms.

Your Solution For Disease FREE Health.

  http://bit.ly/RGNZ0i

“[N]ow people are saying, 'Wait a minute, maybe we’ve gone too far.' ...We told everybody for decades [that] everybody should be on an aspirin once a day. And a lot of people were saying, 'Wait a minute, do I really need to be taking a pill every day, even thought I’m totally healthy?' There were studies, and they looked at certain outcomes but a recent large study has shown that the internal bleeding consequence balances out the benefits to your heart. So we’re now pulling back that recommendation. If you have a healthy heart, if you don’t have a history of heart problems, we’re now pulling that recommendation back.

Same thing with PSA testing. You’re seeing the medical community say, 'Wait a minute, we don’t need to do a PSA test for prostate cancer on every older man in the world.' We’re also seeing the recommendations on breast cancer screening with mammography in that middle-aged group being pulled back.

We’re seeing a lot of research coming out now that’s saying some of these giant recommendations to do more stuff probably were not based on sound science. When we look at the full gamut of consequences of overtesting, we may be creating too many false-positives and hurting more people then we’re helping.”

More Doctors Beginning to Realize What They Were Taught is Wrong

Many doctors are now beginning to accept that some things they were taught in medical school is simply wrong.

“I was taught, for example, that everybody has one million nephrons (the unit in a kidney). We now know that’s not true. We now know that it ranges from 200,000 to two million, and everyone’s different. If you have a lot, you may have more of a reserve. If you have few, you may be more frail in your ability to withstand an insult to your kidney.

World's #1 Publisher of Information About Alternative Cancer Treatments

  http://bit.ly/ZVR6Qw

We were taught fat was bad for you. We were taught, 'Don’t eat fat. Fat is bad. Go low-fat everything.' That was probably wrong advice that the medical community gave to the general public. We now know that what’s far more important than avoiding fat is limiting sugar, a highly addictive substance, which a driver of obesity and heart disease and has many detrimental effects, mainly the hormonal effect of changing your fat storage balance. Little did we doctors know that by demonizing fat we were encouraging high-carbohydrate foods because they are notoriously 'low-fat.' Obesity surged parallel to the 'avoid fat' era of medicine. We are now dealing with a generation addicted to sugar and we’re seeing the largest growth in obesity in the history of the country.

In terms of the percent of our population on disability and the average time on disability, we are now the most disabled country in the world. And one leading driver is obesity-related chronic diseases—a problem burdening our healthcare system. These are lifestyle diseases (medical problems that can be avoided with better behavior). We’re now recognizing that some of the emphasis in the direction that we had in medical school was just not based on the solid evidence that we’re now seeing.”

What Hospitals Won’t Tell You...Medical Negligence

What Hospitals Won’t Tell You...Medical Negligence

Medical errors are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and what’s even more shocking is that the harm often is preventable.

Hospitals often make egregious errors ranging from minor mistakes to treating the wrong patient, leaving behind surgical tools in a person after surgery, or operating on the wrong body part.

According to the 2011 Health Grades report,1 the incidence rate of medical harm occurring in the United States is estimated to be over 40,000 harmful and/or lethal errors DAILY!

Dr. Martin Makary is the author of The New York Times bestselling book Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won’t Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Healthcare, which is a story about the dangerous practices and mistakes of modern medicine. He’s a practicing surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital and an associate professor of public health policy at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

As a busy surgeon, he’s worked in many of the best hospitals in the country, and can testify to the amazing power of modern medicine to cure. But he’s also been a witness to the medical culture that routinely leaves surgical sponges inside patients, amputates the wrong limbs, and overdoses children because of sloppy handwriting.

Healthy eating, exercise, and stress management can help keep you OUT of the hospital, but if you do have to go there, knowing your rights and responsibilities can help ensure your hospital stay is a safe and healing one.

Variations in Quality Medical and Safety of Health Care Driven by 'Perverse Incentives'

One in four patients in a hospital is harmed in some way from a medical mistake, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Many doctors have been concerned about the quality and mistakes in healthcare, but the culture has been such that it dissuaded open discussion and transparency.

“We’re really at a very exciting time in medicine,” Dr. Makary says. “For the first time, we’re speaking up openly and honestly about this problem. We’ve got research now that supports it.

...[W]hen I was at a major medical conference once, I heard a surgeon at the podium ask the audience of thousands of doctors, 'Do you know of somebody out there in practice who should not be practicing because they are too dangerous?' And every single hand went up. Everybody seems to know about this problem. Everybody even knows of somebody who’s too dangerous to be in practice. Yet for a long time, we haven’t been honest about the problem.”

Dr. Makary goes on to tell a story from his days as a medical student. A young man came to the emergency room with a fractured humerus, and the doctor told him he needed an MRI, an X-ray, and a CAT scan. The young man replied he didn’t have health insurance, at which point the doctor suddenly changed his tune, telling him to just stay off his arm, wear a sling, and all would be fine.

“I thought about it,” Dr. Makary says, “The doctor was right; all those tests don’t really change what we do, because the treatment for that type of fracture was just a sling and to rest it. So, we see these wide variations on what we do. And when you ask the doctors, 'Look, what’s going on? Why do we have so much variation in quality and safety in America?' they point out things like 'Look at our perverse incentives that promote bad care among as subgroup of doctors out there.'”

Is Your Surgery to Satisfy Your Doctor’s Quota?

Doctors are under tremendous pressure these days. Not only are they asked to see more patients per hour, many surgeons even have surgery quotas to meet.

“They’re told they need to do so many operations in a month,” Dr. Makary says. “Sometimes doctors tell me they get text messages and emails, saying, 'You need to do so many operations by the end of the month.' They’re expected to do more, often with less resources.”

Quotas aren’t the only symptom of a major disconnect between healing a patient’s problem and running a for-profit disease management scheme. As discussed by Dr. Makary, sometimes a computer software program will order tests and studies automatically, and the doctor just has to sign off on them.

“Doctors don’t like blind triggers that result in overtreatment. They want to practice medicine the way it was intended to be practiced – individualized in care,” he says.

While computers can help with some standardization in medicine increasing dependence on computerized diagnosis and even treatment is an issue that needs to be seriously considered and discussed. We’ve had a continually evolving improvement in artificial intelligence, so much so that in the next 20 to 30 years computers will be able to interview a patient and then spit out an entire battery of recommendations. However, the recommendations will only be as good as the information it’s based on. What good will it do if all RoboDoc can do is spit out tests and treatment protocols based on biased, inaccurate or fraudulent data at a more efficient rate than human M.D.'s?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story at-a-glance

The biotech company Senomyx creates novel flavor enhancing compounds for
the processed food industry in order to make foods and beverages that taste
good while reducing sugar and salt content. Customers include Pepsi Co.,
Ajinomoto Co. (the maker of aspartame and meat glue), Nestlé and others.

The genetically engineered flavor enhancers work by triggering taste
receptors on your tongue, effectively tricking your taste buds into sensing
sweetness, saltiness, or “coolness”

Senomyx has created a taste testing system that provides scientists with
biochemical responses and electronic readouts when a flavor ingredient
interacts with their patented receptor, letting them know whether or not
they’ve “hit the mark” in terms of flavor. This process uses human kidney
cells originating from an electively aborted human fetus.

These fetal kidney cells (HEK293) have been cloned for decades, as they
offer a reliable way to produce new proteins using genetic engineering.

Senomyx has engineered HEK293 cells to function like human taste receptor
cells.

Flavor enhancers do not need to be listed on food labels, falling instead
under the generic category of artificial and/or natural flavors.

Do the Brain Benefits of Exercise Last?

Do the Brain Benefits of Exercise Last?

One of the many perks of exercising is that it is well known to support
your brain health through BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor). This even
spurs the creation of new brain cells (a process called neurogenesis).

Exercise boosts brain health through multiple pathways, including
improving your hormone levels, increasing blood flow to your brain, reducing
stress, and many others likely yet to be discovered.

The benefits of exercise can be felt rather quickly, which is great for
motivation… but what happens if you stop exercising? As you might suspect,
new research suggests your brain may quickly revert back to its pre-exercise
state…

Move It or Lose It: You’ve Got to Keep Exercising to Sustain the Brain
Benefits

If you work out religiously for three months, then suddenly stop for an
extended period, your muscle tone will definitely suffer. This is one of the
more obvious examples that your body is designed for regular exercise, not
sporadic or infrequent activity.

Likewise, two new studies presented at the 2012 annual meeting of the
Society for Neuroscience also revealed that the brain benefits of exercise
also quickly fade if your exercise program stops.

In the first study, active rats that had a week of inactivity were pitted
against completely inactive rats while performing memory tests. The
previously active rats completed the tests much faster and had at least twice
as many new neurons in the hippocampus region (the “memory center”) of their
brains. But remember, this was after just one week of inactivity.

At three weeks of inactivity, their new neurons began to decrease, as did
their performance on the memory test. After six weeks of no activity, the
neurons declined even more, as did their memory test scores, leading the
study authors to suggest the “exercise-induced benefits may be transient.”1

In the second study, rats that were active for 10 weeks, followed by
three weeks of inactivity, had brains that were nearly identical to those of
rats that had been completely inactive. In prior studies, it was shown that
exercise had a favorable effect on the animals’ moods, making them less
anxious and more resilient to stress. However, the new research suggests that
such benefits “wear off quickly.” As the first study’s senior author noted:2

“Brain changes are not maintained when regular physical exercise is
interrupted… though our observations are restricted to rats, indirect
evidence suggests that the same phenomenon occurs in human beings.”

It’s Not Too Late to Get Moving!

While the benefits of exercise might fade fast, they can also be achieved
relatively quickly. Exercising – even briefly – can change your DNA in a way
that readies your body for increased muscle strength and fat burning. It also
boosts your natural human growth hormone (HGH) production, which is important
for maintaining muscle mass as you age. If you’re approaching middle-age or
beyond, you might be thinking that it’s too late for you to get in shape, but
this is not the case.

Remember, you are never too old to start exercising.

In fact, exercise gets even more important with advancing age. Research
shows that, no matter your age, you stand to gain significant improvements in
strength, range of motion, balance, bone density and mental clarity through
exercise. It’s also been revealed that if you're fit at 50, you're much more
likely to be healthy into your 70s and 80s.

According to new research, men and women who'd been the least fit in
their 40s and 50s developed the most chronic conditions early in the aging
process, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, COPD, kidney
disease, and lung or colon cancer.3

Essentially, being physically fit "compresses the time" you are likely to
spend being debilitated during old age. Clearly, exercising throughout your
lifespan is highly beneficial, and the earlier you start, the more profound
the benefits will be. It makes sense, then, that if you exercise regularly,
you are preventing and reducing chronic disease processes throughout your
entire life. This will make a major difference in your quality of life at all
ages …

More Exercise Isn’t Necessarily Better

One of the most common reasons why people give up on exercise, and
therefore lose out on all of its priceless benefits, is a lack of time. So if
you think you need to spend an hour pounding the treadmill every day in order
to be fit, then you'll be pleased to learn this is an outdated myth.

Research has disproven it many times in recent years, such as in one
study that found those who spent 30 minutes per day exercising lost more
weight than those who spent a full hour at it every day.4 While it may be
counterintuitive, the results showed moderate exercisers got more for their
effort – they lost more weight in half the time.5

So it really is possible, and imperative, to fit regular exercise into
virtually any schedule. Previous research has shown that just 20 minutes of
high-intensity interval training, two to three times a week, can yield
greater results than slow and steady conventional aerobics performed five
times a week.

Treating Cancer With Shark Cartilage

This therapy appears to have enormous benefits

One of the most life-threatening circumstances dependent on new blood vessel
growth is cancer. Cancer cells are, basically, normal cells that have only
one function—reproduction. In their frenzy of uncontrolled growth, a
haphazard maze of blood vessels develop, which must constantly be expanded
and replaced. This constant drain of nutrients combined with the subsequent
flood of toxic wastes, places an enormous strain on the body’s reserves.
Eventually, the growing tumor mass begins to crowd and divert precious
resources away from the vital organs. This eventually leads to their
destruction and, ultimately, the death of the host organism.

For decades, the majority of research efforts have concentrated on treating
cancer with radiation, surgery, and toxic chemicals. It was only in the mid-
1980s that a few farsighted researchers began concentrating their efforts on
finding substances that would stop angiogenesis. The late Dr. Judah Folkman,
of Children’s Hospital in Boston, is considered the pioneer in the study of
angiogenesis and its role in cancer inhibition. [Dr. Folkman has shown that
if a tumor can’t develop its own blood supply, it will stop growing when it
reaches 1 to 2 cubic mm—the size of a pencil point. (Sci 87;235:442–447)
Remember that 1 mm is only 0.04 inches!] It was a member of Dr. Folkman’s
research team, Dr. Robert Langer of MIT, who discovered the benefits of shark
cartilage.

Initial studies were performed on rabbits. In one eye, tumors and tiny shark
cartilage pellets were implanted in the cornea. In the other eye, tumors and
identical-sized pellets without shark extract were implanted. After 19 days,
the animals were sacrificed because the tumor masses in the untreated eyes
had continued to grow unchecked. They had become “three-dimensional and
necrotic.” The tumors next to the implanted shark cartilage pellets, however,
showed little evidence of any growth or new blood vessel formation.

Next, came research from Belgium showing that oral dosage of dried shark
cartilage extract was just as effective as injecting it! Cancerous animals
given the oral shark cartilage extract showed practically no tumor growth. In
fact, after 21 days, their tumors were about 60 percent of their original
size. On the other hand, after 21 days, the tumors in animals not taking the
extract were 2.5 times their original size! (This unpublished study was
performed at the prestigious cancer research center in Brussels, Belgium,
Institut Jules Bordet, by Dr. G. Atassi in late 1989.)

What’s amazing in all of these studies, is that shark cartilage extract
doesn’t appear to have any direct effect on the tumors themselves. It works
instead, by simply interrupting the blood supply and formation of new lymph
and blood vessels. (J Appl Biochem Biotech 83;8:9) This probably explains why
no toxicity was reported in all the studies performed in the last seven or
eight years.

Studies have been conducted in humans as well, though. The studies so far
have been done using individuals who were already severely ill and for whom
other forms of treatment had failed. The results show remarkable benefits for
both quality of life and longevity: reduction in pain, reduction in tumor
size, recovery of energy, and simple survival.

I am frequently asked if I think shark cartilage could be used as a
preventive measure against cancer. It seems that it could be, however there’s
no long-term hard data to support this. I’ll be the first to admit that more
research needs to be done, but I can tell you one thing for sure: If I had a
history of either breast or prostate cancer (among others), I’d definitely be
taking shark cartilage to help prevent any reccurrence. It’s a therapy that
appears to provide enormous benefits while causing little, if any, adverse
side effects.

As a supplement, shark cartilage is expensive. As an adjunct to cancer
treatment, it’s a bargain. A single 750 mg capsule of the extract retails for
no more than 30 cents, and a 400 gram jar is no more than $80. The normal
initial dosage in cancer cases, is 60 grams per day (split in equal dosages
and taken 10 to 15 minutes before each meal). Once in remission, many reduce
the dosage to one capsule for every 11 pounds of their body weight. (As in
the study mentioned earlier, dosages given to animals is generally 750 mg for
every 11 pounds of body weight.)

Shark cartilage extract is a true breakthrough. It is non-toxic, and easy for
anyone to administer, since oral consumption is the most effective route of
delivery. And maybe, most important of all, it can be used in conjunction
with any other form of cancer therapy whether conventional or otherwise.

(Regardless of whether a person chooses chemotherapy, surgery or laetrile or
Gerson therapy, shark cartilage extract can still be used safely and
effectively without fear of jeopardizing any positive results!) Even still,
there are a few instances when new blood vessel growth is necessary in adults
and shark cartilage isn’t recommended. Some examples include: after a recent
heart attack or certain types of strokes where development of collateral
circulation is encouraged; during pregnancy; in cases of non-healing
fractures and during muscle building programs.

Over the years, I’ve seen hundreds of cancer treatment therapies come and go.
While shark cartilage extract may not be the final answer, its unique ability
to inhibit angiogenesis makes it an extremely viable adjunct to all cancer
treatment programs.

Thank You  Dr. David Williams

Story at-a-glance

Poor will power is NOT necessarily what drives you to overeat on junk
food. An in-depth investigation into the processed-food industry reveals
there’s a conscious effort on behalf of food manufacturers to get you hooked
on foods that are convenient and inexpensive to make.
Sugar, salt and fat are the top three substances making processed foods
so addictive. Sugar alone has been shown to be more addictive than cocaine,
and food manufacturers use sophisticated taste science to determine the
“bliss point” that makes you crave more.
Recent research confirms that processed meat consumption is strongly
associated with premature death. According to the researchers, reducing daily
processed meat consumption to less than 20 grams a day could reduce mortality
rates across Europe by three percent annually.
According to a new report from the American Diabetes Association, an
estimated 22.3 million people were living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes in
2012, up from 17.5 million in 2007.
To protect your health, I advise spending 90 percent of your food budget
on whole foods, and only 10 percent on processed foods.
