Unnecessary Procedures and Surgeries On The Rise in U.S. Health Care System
Beverly Anne Sanchez
FOLLOW
Research statistics indicate that unnecessary procedures and surgeries are on the rise across the U.S. Learn what you need to do in order to help protect the lives and health of you and your loved ones.

Going under the knife? Need surgery?  Well, stop, wait and please consider this:  there are today over 50,000 people daily undergoing unnecessary procedures and unnecessary surgeries.  Yes, unnecessary.

The official rendition from government backed and sponsored sources say one thing while the statistics and research figures from private, independent medical research sources paint quite another picture. According to "official" federal government figures, only 30% of surgeries are truly unnecessary procedures and unnecessary surgeries and that is because of physician uncertainty about the effectiveness of an operation. This is not
a very comforting thought to this writer.

However, there is another side to these government claims: unnecessary procedures and unnecessary surgeries are rapidly increasing especially at the tripling rate of outpatient or ambulatory clinic openings since the beginnings of 2006.

Especially of interest is that most unnecessary procedures and unnecessary surgeries have been concentrated investigations of specific problems in the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine: colonoscopies and endoscopies.

In particular, colonoscopies and endoscopies marked an increase of 1,610 and 775, respectively, for every 100,000 patients after just one much heralded outpatient clinic opening recently. Consequently, between the years of 2002 and 2006 there was an increase of 25,000 colonoscopies and 9,800 endoscopies alone in the state of Florida. These figures were duly noted in the Archives of Surgery Journal.

Further research indicated that researchers were undecided as to whether the additional procedures were indeed unnecessary procedures and unnecessary surgeries. "We cannot say whether a given patient needed a particular procedure or not," one researcher said in an e-mail.

Further Facts: Physician-Owned Outpatient Clinics

Throughout U.S. over 57 million outpatient (ambulatory) surgeries are performed annually. Consequently, more than 5,000 outpatient facilities have opened. These are privately owned and not those found in major hospitals. Outpatient clinics are big business for the health care system.

In actuality, outpatient clinics are mostly physician-owned and staffed giving them total control over ordering, purchasing equipment and scheduling procedures.

"I think they are good for patients because of the efficiency, convenience, and lower costs of operation," said Dr. Stain, who wrote an accompanying editorial in the Journal. However, in an email, "physician-owned ambulatory surgery centers may reflect a conflict of interest between the physician's patient-care responsibilities and perceived personal financial interest," wrote Dr. Steven Stain of Albany Medical College to Reuters Health. "This may lead to an erosion of the public's trust in health care providers."  Typically, colonoscopies at ambulatory surgery centers approximately cost $400 each while endoscopies go for a little less.

Other Unnecessary Procedures and Surgeries

Gary Null, PhD., in Death by Medicine reports that there are over 8.9 million documented unnecessary surgeries performed every year in the U.S. with another report claiming that 60% of the cases were not at all necessary in medical terms.

The most common unwarranted surgeries include: hysterectomies, Cesarean sections, unwarranted mammograms and breast procedures including unwarranted breast removals. However, coronary artery bypass surgeries have become the most common overall. (3)  On average, there are more than half a million bypass surgeries performed annually, primarily on men, costing more than $50,000 each.

Women are at high risk as well in that there are over 750,000 women who have their uterus removed annually in hysterectomies: of those women 2,500 never leave the operating room alive. These are not sick women, but healthy women who go into the hospital and do not come out," says Dr. Herbert Goldfarb, a gynecologist and assistant clinical professor at New York University's School of Medicine. Of the 750,000 women who did need surgeries, 27% did not.

Competing for the number one spot of unnecessary surgeries are births by C-sections. Births by Cesarean is now the most common major surgery for women in the U.S. with more than 920,000 women reporting to a C-section annually.

The Love of Money Is The Root of All Evil and U.S. Health Care System Plays The Whore

Put quite simply, it pays health care professionals for you to be sick and have to go under the knife.  If you don’t respond to their drug addicting medication then go for the knife. To accuse all in the health care system to be literally after your body for gain is unjust but it is not unjustified and not far from the truth. However, it remains for the public to take their lives into their own hands while using discernment in their selection of health care providers and facilities in finding those few truly dedicated to the healing sciences.

Precautionary Steps To Guard Against Unnecessary Procedures and Surgeries

* When proposed with surgery or procedures go over your Patient Bill of Rights

* Ask for a second or third opinion and don’t be naive and trusting.

* Be skeptical about all medical and health advice: choose very wisely.

* Dr. Marcus Welby, M.D. and Dr. Kildare are no longer on TV. Face reality and take your life in your own hands -      your life depends on it.

Sharp Rise in Women’s Deaths from Overdose of Painkillers

Deaths from prescription painkiller overdoses are skyrocketing among women, according to a new report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that found such deaths have increased five-fold from 1999 to 2010.

With more women now dying every day from drug overdoses than from motor vehicle crashes, public health agencies are being forced to take notice of this epidemic problem and many are asking the million-dollar question of why so many women (and men) are falling victim to these drugs.

The CDC suggested several contributing issues, such as the fact that women are more likely to have chronic pain, be prescribed prescription painkillers at higher doses and use them for longer periods than men and women are more likely to become dependent on these drugs faster.

But the real issue lies with the drugs themselves not only their heavily addictive nature, which turns deadly for many who take them, but also the vast overreliance on them as a first line of defense for pain, when other, safer, options exist.

More Women Are Dying From Painkiller Overdoses Than Cocaine and Heroin Combined

Men are still more likely to die from prescription painkiller overdose, but women are quickly catching up. Nearly 50,000 such deaths occurred among women between 1999 and 2010, and the statistics revealed by the CDC give a somber view of this growing problem:

More than 6,600 women, or 18 women every day, died from a prescription painkiller overdose in 2010

There were four times more deaths among women from prescription painkiller overdose than for cocaine and heroin deaths combined in 2010.

In 2010, there were more than 200,000 emergency department visits for opioid misuse or abuse among women -- about one every three minutes.

The problem, once primarily seen in inner cities, is now spanning to rural areas, hitting people of all ethnic backgrounds and income levels. For women, a rise in single-parent households may be partly to blame. As the New York Times recently reported:

The rise of the single-parent household has thrust immense responsibility on women, who are not only mothers, but also, in many cases, primary breadwinners.

Some who described feeling overwhelmed by their responsibilities said they craved the numbness that drugs bring. Others said highs made them feel pretty, strong and productive, a welcome respite from the chaos of their lives.

How Prescription Painkillers Kill

Many people find themselves addicted to painkillers before they even realize what’s happened, often after taking the drugs to recover from surgery or treat chronic back, or other, pain. The drugs work by binding to receptors in your brain to decrease the perception of pain. But they also create a temporary feeling of euphoria, followed by dysphoria, that can easily lead to physical dependence and addiction.

This may drive some people to take larger doses in order to regain the euphoric effect, or escape the unhappiness caused by withdrawal. Others find they need to continue taking the drugs not only to reduce withdrawal symptoms but to simply feel normal. Large doses of the painkillers can cause sedation and slowed breathing to the point that breathing stops altogether, resulting in death. However, not all deaths are the result of abuse, per se. According to the New York Times:

While younger women in their 20s and 30s tend to have the highest rates of opioid abuse, the overdose death rate was highest among women ages 45 to 54 The range indicates that at least some portion of the drugs may have been prescribed appropriately for pain, Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said in an interview. If death rates were driven purely by abuse, then one would expect the death rates to be highest among younger women who are the biggest abusers.

Among the most commonly abused medications are:

Opioids, such as Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet, codeine and Fentora, which are used for pain relief

Benzodiazepines, such as Xanax, Valium and Ativan, which are used as sedatives to induce sleep, prevent seizures and relieve anxiety

Amphetamine-like drugs, such as Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall, which are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Out of this group, the opioid pain relievers are by far the biggest problem, causing nearly three out of four prescription drug overdoses.

Drug Makers Now Devising Drugs to Treat Painkiller Dependency

Rather than focusing on the root of the problem, which in many cases is addressing the pain that’s spurring painkiller use in the first place, drug makers are eager to promote their painkillers, which make up a nearly $9.4-billion market in the US alone.

Their solutions involve even more drugs, such as Orexo AB, which is intended to block opiate receptors and help lessen dependence. Other studies are in the works to design painkillers that enter the brain slowly in order to reduce the euphoria that can lead to addiction. Still other solutions involve pills with harder shells to hinder crushing, or which congeal when crushed so they can’t be injected or snorted. Even adding unpleasant substances, such as soap or the hot-pepper ingredient capsaicin, has been discussed as a way to discourage overdoses.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been at the forefront, encouraging treatments that are less addictive but again missing the irony that treating a drug problem with more drugs is in no way a long-term solution to this devastating problem. As Bloomberg reported, the FDA stated:

We are not wedded to any one way or the other to stop the abuse, Douglas Throckmorton, deputy director for regulatory programs at the FDA, said in a telephone interview. What we want is abuse-deterrent formulations that work. We know how important this is.

Painkillers Often Lead to Experimentation with Illegal Drugs

The war against drugs has long focused on illegal street drugs like cocaine and heroin, but it’s clear that there should now be a new primary target. For a long time, marijuana, cigarettes and alcohol were the first drugs of choice by those who later may move into more hard-core drugs, hence the term "gateway drug." But things have changed a lot in recent years. Prescription drugsespecially prescription painkillers like OxyContin are now leading the pack as the most common "gateway" to illegal drug use, and the consequences are far deadlier.

According to a 2012 press release:

... Since 2000, the drugs sending people to their graves or to rehab have been shifting away from illicit drugs and toward prescription drugs. A 2011 report on the subject from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made it clear: prescription narcotic pain reliever overdose deaths now exceed the number of deaths from heroin and cocaine combined.

For decades now, it has been usual that many young people looking for a drug to experiment with for the first time would choose marijuana... The Narconon Arrowhead drug rehabilitation program has recently uncovered a new pattern since prescription opiates have increasingly become the first drug used by many young people. This pattern is backed up by government surveyed results. According to Michael Botticelli, Director of the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse, prescription drugs now equal marijuana as entry-level drugs.

...Our own clients and people calling in daily for information about our program or help have told us story after story about addictions starting with the use of prescription drugs, stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, a premier drug rehab facility in Southeastern Oklahoma. Sadly, prescription medications have become the newest of the gateway drugs. Sadder still are the losses of life and other severe consequences that go hand in hand with drug abuse, which is especially the case with prescription drug abuse.'

Hallmark adds that those addicted to prescriptions will often end up needing treatment or will even start taking illicit drugs. One of the most common examples of this is the connection between those addicted to painkillers that then start taking heroin..."

These 11 Non-Drug Solutions May Help Heal Your Pain

Many of those succumbing to prescription drug overdoses started taking the drugs not to get high, but to control pain  often back pain. The solution, then, is to avoid taking the drugs in the first place, an option many physicians neglect to offer to their pain patients. If you are suffering from pain, I suggest you work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner to determine what's really triggering your pain, and then address the underlying cause.

Remember, along with exposing you to potentially deadly risks, medications only provide symptomatic relief and in no way, shape or form address the underlying cause of your pain. Still, I realize that pain can be debilitating so you don't need to suffer unnecessarily while you get to the bottom of your pain issues. The following options provide excellent pain relief without any of the health hazards that prescription (and even over-the-counter) painkillers carry.

If you have chronic pain, try these first, before even thinking about prescription painkillers of any kind.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is a drug-free approach for pain management of all kinds. EFT borrows from the principles of acupuncture, in that it helps you balance out your subtle energy system.

It helps resolve underlying, often subconscious, negative emotions that may be exacerbating your physical pain. By stimulating (tapping) well-established acupuncture points with your fingertips, you rebalance your energy system, which tends to dissipate pain.

Astaxanthin: One of the most effective fat-soluble antioxidants known. It has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and in many cases works far more effectively than anti-inflammatory drugs. Higher doses are typically required and one may need 8 mg or more per day to achieve this benefit.

Ginger: This herb has potent anti-inflammatory activity and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.

Curcumin: In a study of osteoarthritis patients, those who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility. A past study also found that a turmeric extract composed of curcuminoids blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the overproduction of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.

Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or "Indian frankincense," this herb contains specific active anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Krill Oil: The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA contained in krill oil have been found by many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for pain.

Bromelain: This enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form but eating fresh pineapple, including some of the bromelain-rich stem, may also be helpful.

Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter acts as a "joint lubricant" and an anti-inflammatory. I have used this for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards. I used a topical preparation for  this.

Evening Primrose, Black Currant and Borage Oils: These contain the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain.

Cayenne Cream: Also called cap saicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body's supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmits pain signals to your brain.

Methods such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation, hot and cold packs, and even holding hands can also result in astonishing pain relief without any drugs.

National Study Indicates that 45% of Cesarean Sections May Be Unnecessary

Cesarean Sections (C-sections) continue to occur at a high rate in the US despite evidence that they increase poor health outcomes for women and their children. A new nationwide study reveals that 26% of US mothers delivered via C-section in 2001, and 45% of these deliveries were not considered medically indicated.

Furthermore, this study suggests that many risk factors for C-section delivery could be addressed prior to pregnancy, indicating that these discussions should take place before women become pregnant.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Whitney P. Witt, director of maternal and child health research at Truven Health Analytics, noted that many C-sections are not medically necessary and since these surgical deliveries can be dangerous for both the mother and the baby, the medical community is increasingly concerned about reducing the rate of non-indicated and elective C-sections when possible.

The research team studied how the risk of having a medically indicated and non-medically indicated C-section was affected by many factors both over the course of a woman’s life and during pregnancy. The researchers examined data on 9,350 pairs of mothers and children from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort, a nationally representative sample of children born in 2001 and their mothers. Of the women surveyed, 74% had a vaginal delivery, 14% had a medically indicated C-section, and 12% had a non-indicated C-section.

Important findings from the study include:

Women were over 100 times more likely to have a non-indicated C-section if they previously had a C-section. However, women were only 20 times more likely to have a medically indicated C-section if they had a prior C-section.

Women were more likely to give birth via indicated C-section if they experienced any stressful life event prior to pregnancy.

Obese women were about two times more likely to deliver via C-section than normal weight women.

Older women were significantly more likely to deliver via C-section than their younger counterparts.

Women who had chronic conditions or experienced pregnancy complications were more likely to deliver via indicated C-section.

Women and their doctors should work together to make decisions regarding childbirth. Based on previous research and what we have heard anecdotally, health insurers and hospitals may also need to re-evaluate their policies to increase rates of vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), said Witt. Furthermore, this study suggests that many risk factors for C-section delivery could be addressed prior to pregnancy, indicating that these discussions should take place before women become pregnant.

The study also examined Market-Scan data from Truven Health Analytics, finding that a C-section delivery costs $4,000 more than a vaginal delivery on average. In fact, reducing the national C-section rate by only 2.8% would save approximately $101 million in C-section-related expenditures per year.

The research was funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration and the National Institutes of Health. It has been published in the Maternal and Child Health Journal and is available online here.

New Study Finds Sunlight Boosts Nitric Oxide Production

By Dr. Mercola

By now, you are probably aware I am a strong proponent of sun exposure and its many health benefits. Most of those benefits come from the boost in vitamin D, but a new UK study suggests sunlight’s benefits extend far beyond vitamin D.

In fact, exposure to the sun may be one of the most important steps you can take in preventing heart disease and stroke. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh discovered that when sunlight touches your skin, nitric oxide is released into your bloodstream, and nitric oxide is a powerful blood pressure lowering compound.

Researchers have concluded sun exposure may even prolong your life by significantly cutting your heart attack/stroke risk. The abstract for the study was published online in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology on April 15, 2013.

The Edinburgh researchers mentioned an absolutely stunning statistic. For every one skin cancer death in northern Europe, between 60 and 100 people die from stroke or heart disease, related to hypertension.

Knowing that your risk of dying from heart disease or stroke is 80 times greater on average than from skin cancer really puts it in perspective. While higher vitamin D levels also correlate with lower rates of cardiovascular disease, oral vitamin D supplements do not appear to benefit blood pressure, and this latest study may be telling us why.

    Researcher Richard Weller stated:

"We suspect that the benefits to heart health of sunlight will outweigh the risk of skin cancer. The work we have done provides a mechanism that might account for this, and also explains why dietary vitamin D supplements alone will not be able to compensate for lack of sunlight."

   You Are My Sunshine

Research is illuminating a forever-growing list of sunlight’s health benefits. This isn’t really surprising when you consider the fact that we evolved hunting and foraging under the sun.

This team of researchers found that your body's production of nitric oxide is separate from its production of vitamin D, so it follows that there are two completely separate sets of benefits. Until now, increased vitamin D had been thought to be the sole explanation for the sun's health benefits, but it appears from these latest findings that vitamin D is only one part of the story.

Besides the benefits derived from increased vitamin D, the sun also provides relief from a wide variety of health problems from mechanisms separate from vitamin D. For a comprehensive overview, refer to our previous article on the sun’s benefits, but here are just a few:

Improved mood and energy levels through the release of endorphins
Better melatonin regulation and synchronization of your biorhythms
Suppression of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis
Treating skin diseases (including psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, and
scleroderma) and  antibiotic-resistant infections, such as MRSA
Treating tuberculosis, neonatal jaundice, and possibly T cell lymphoma

Why Care About Nitric Oxide?

The researchers found that sunlight triggers your skin’s production of nitric oxide. Why is this significant? Because nitric oxide is crucial for maintaining healthy blood pressure, helps prevent atherosclerosis, and plays a role in modulating immune system function.

Your skin contains large stores of nitrite and nitrate, but only the nitrite is biologically active. Sunlight appears to prompt conversion of nitrate to nitrite and nitric oxide (NO). Please don't confuse nitric oxide (NO) with nitrous oxide (N2O) or "laughing gas, the anesthetic gas used by dentists.

Nitric oxide is such an important compound that it was dubbed Molecule of the Year by Science magazine in 1992, followed by the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine for its discovery as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. Your blood vessels require the amino acid L-arginine for the synthesis of nitric oxide, since L-arginine is its precursor in your body.

By helping to regulate your blood pressure, nitric oxide enhances blood flow. Nitric oxide signals the smooth muscle cells in your blood vessels to relax so that your vessels dilate and your blood flows more freely, which helps your arteries stay free of plaque. When you have inadequate nitric oxide, your risk for coronary artery disease increases.

If your blood is flowing freely, then nearly every physiological process will function better. If your blood is sluggish, then important cells and nutrients can't reach the areas that need them. It's like getting the tow truck to the scene of the accident no tow truck means no repairs.

Not only is nitric oxide important in regulating blood pressure, it also functions as a signaling molecule in your brain and immune system. Besides sitting in the sun, you can increase your nitric oxide levels with a few natural supplements and techniques:

Calcium and magnesium rich foods and supplements, and vitamins C and E
        Olive extract
        Bitter melon
        Electrical acupuncture
Taking a warm bath, or by breathing in and out through one nostril (close off
the other nostril and your mouth)

Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure, the SILENT Killer

According to the CDC, high blood pressure is the second greatest public health threat in the US. According to the CDC, 36 million people in the US have uncontrolled high blood pressure, and 14 million of them don’t even know it quite alarming considering uncontrolled high blood pressure can be deadly when it results in a heart attack or stroke. But insufficient nitric oxide is just one factor contributing to the high blood pressure epidemic.

High blood pressure is associated with insulin and leptin resistance and elevated uric acid levels. One of the things driving up uric acid levels is overconsumption of fructose, and to a lesser degree, grains, beer and caffeine. Fructose breaks down into a variety of waste products, one of which is uric acid. Uric acid drives up your blood pressure by inhibiting nitric oxide in your blood vessels. In fact, 17 out of 17 studies demonstrate that elevated uric acid levels lead to hypertension.

According to the latest research, the safest range for uric acid is between 3 and 5.5 milligrams per deciliter, and there appears to be a steady relationship between uric acid levels and blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, even down to the range of 3 to 4 mg/dl. The ideal uric acid level appears to be around 4 mg/dl for men and 3.5 mg/dl for women.

Don’t Believe Everything You Hear About Melanoma

Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer. However, your risk of dying from it pales in comparison to your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, as discussed earlier. And the rates of melanoma so often quoted by government officials may be grossly inflated, based on recent data.

A report in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology claims that 90 percent of melanoma surgeries are actually unnecessary removals of benign lesions and not melanoma at all, raising questions about the accuracy of the melanoma epidemic. The lead author of the report attributed the unnecessary excisions to an increased awareness by patients who see anti-sun promotions, such as "melanoma awareness" campaigns, and worriedly run into clinics demanding treatment. The report highlights the necessity of getting a second, and perhaps even a third opinion from a specialized clinic before going under the scalpel.

Unfortunately, what this means is that, while the melanoma epidemic appears to be real if you go by surgical statistics, those stats actually paint a misleading picture if 90 percent of "melanoma cases" are not really melanoma! Sensible exposure to UVB light (adequate exposure without allowing your skin to burn) may actually protect you from melanoma, whereas UVA radiation is associated with skin damage. For example, indoor workers actually have a higher risk of melanoma than outdoor workers, suggesting that chronic sun exposure may indeed have a protective effect.

Melanoma studies are just now beginning to look at variables such as gender and affected body area. For example, one new Journal of Investigative Dermatology study found differences in skin cancer distribution patterns between men and women. We need many more studies such as this before we can draw definitive conclusions about how the sun can increaseor decrease your risk.

Basic Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Heart

Sunlight will provide enormous health benefits with respect to increasing your nitric oxide production, enhancing your vitamin D levels, and helping regulate your blood pressure, which in turn will reduce your overall cardiovascular risk. But you cannot stop there! You must also address other diet and lifestyle factors, starting with the basics.

        Proper Food Choices

For a comprehensive guide about which foods to eat and which to avoid, see my comprehensive nutrition plan. Generally speaking, you should focus your diet on whole, ideally organic, unprocessed foods that come from healthy, sustainable and preferably local sources. For the highest nutritional benefit, eat a good portion of your food raw.

Most people (although there are clearly individual differences) should strive for a diet high in healthful fats (as high as 50-70 percent of the calories you eat), moderate amounts of high quality protein, and abundant vegetables. Non-vegetable carbohydrates should be a fairly minimal part of your diet. Sugar, and fructose in particular, can act as a toxin when consumed in excess, driving multiple disease processes in your body including insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and systemic inflammation.

        High-Quality Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats

If you want to increase your overall health and energy level and prevent health conditions like heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer's, and a host of other diseases, one of the most important strategies at your disposal is increasing your intake of omega-3 fats and reducing your intake of processed omega-6 fats. An animal-based omega-3 fat like krill oil is incredibly good for your heart and brain.

Comprehensive Exercise Program, including High-Intensity Exercise

Even if you're eating the best diet in the world, you still need to exercise and exercise effectively if you wish to optimize your health. You should include core-strengthening exercises, strength training, and the right kind of stretching, as well as high-intensity burst type activities. Consider combining this with intermittent fasting to supercharge your metabolism.

        Optimize Your Vitamin D

The important factor when it comes to vitamin D is your serum level, which should ideally be between 50-70 ng/ml year-round, and the only way to determine this is with a blood test. Sun exposure or a safe tanning bed is the preferred method, but a vitamin D3 supplement can be used when necessary. According to the latest research, most adults need about 8,000 IU's of vitamin D per day to achieve serum levels of about 40 ng/ml.

If you take supplemental vitamin D, you also need to make sure you're getting enough vitamin K2, as these two nutrients work in tandem to ensure calcium is distributed into the proper areas in your body. Vitamin K2 deficiency is actually what produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, which includes inappropriate calcification that can lead to hardening of your arteries. Fermented vegetables can be a great source of vitamin K2 if you ferment your own using the proper starter culture. Gouda and Edam cheese are also good sources.

        Stress Reduction and Emotional Housekeeping

Your emotional state plays a role in nearly every physical disease, from heart disease to depression to cancer, and yet it’s the factor most often neglected. Stress has a direct impact on inflammation, which underlies many of the chronic diseases that kill people prematurely every day. Meditation, prayer, energy psychology tools, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and yoga are all viable options that can help you relieve stress and clear out hidden emotional blocks.

Avoid as Many Chemicals, Toxins, and Pollutants as Possible

This includes tossing out your toxic household cleaners, soaps, personal hygiene products, air fresheners, bug sprays, pesticides and insecticides, just to name a few, and replacing them with non-toxic alternatives.

Earthing, or Grounding Yourself to the Earth

When walking barefoot on the earth, free electrons transfer from the ground into your body through the soles of your feet. These free electrons are some of the most potent antioxidants known to man. Experiments have shown that these electrons decrease pain and inflammation, improve heart rate, promote sound sleep, and make your blood less viscous, which has a beneficial impact on cardiovascular health.

Lack of grounding due to widespread use of rubber or plastic-soled shoes has contributed to the rise of modern diseases by allowing chronic inflammation to proliferate unchecked. So the more you can walk barefoot on the ground, the better. Ideal locations are the beach, close to or in the water, and on dewy grass. If you spend much time indoors, you may want to consider investing in an Earthing mat.
