Facts on Cholesterol and Methods of Preventing the Ill Effects of Cholesterol

Alternative Medicine:

Cholesterol used to be a word of terror for people. Cholesterol is present in cell membranes and transported through blood plasma.

Cholesterol is produced inside body at the liver. The food we take also contains varying amounts of cholesterol. The body has a system to speed up or reduce cholesterol production in accordance with dietary intake.

There are two types of cholesterol - low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. LDL is considered bad cholesterol and HDL is good cholesterol.

When the levels of LDL become high in blood, the LDL cholesterol gets deposited in blood vessel walls. Arteries become thickened or hardened (arteriosclerosis) and block the free passage of blood. This increases blood pressure and leads to cardio vascular diseases including heart attack.

Another version of LDL is Lp(a). Lp(a) is a variation of LDL, which increase the risk of arteriosclerosis (thickening of blood vessels walls by deposition of fat).

Excess cholesterol levels in blood must be checked with a healthy lifestyle and diet. Daily exercise and keeping your body fit can help reduce LDL levels and increase HDL levels in blood.

Include more vegetarian food in your daily menu. Our body produces enough amounts of cholesterol. If the body is supplemented with excess food in the form of fatty good, you can expect an accumulation of unwanted cholesterol in your body. The extra intake and alter the natural balance in cholesterol production by liver.

Moderate use of alcohol does have a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels. If alcohol consumption gets out of control, it will bring many serious health issues.

Some Ayurvedic home remedies for excess cholesterol include garlic (Allium sativum), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Guggul (Commiphora mukul) etc.

Nonallergic Rhinitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Alternative Medicine:

Nonallergic rhinitis is a syndrome resulting from nasal inflammation that encompasses several distinct diagnoses. Nonallergic rhinitis may be diagnosed by means of clinical evaluation or by means of allergen skin testing or radioallergosorbent testing. This type of rhinitis is not as well understood. Although not triggered by allergy, the symptoms are often the same as seen with allergic rhinitis. The symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis are similar to those of hay fever (allergic rhinitis), but no allergy is involved. Nonallergic rhinitis affects approximately 17 million people in the U.S.- both children and adults. The distinction between allergic and nonallergic rhinitis can be difficult to distinguish clinically, but the distinction may be important for prognosis and treatment decisions. Many symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis are similar to allergic rhinitis, but are more chronic, occurring year-round, and are often worse in winter. Irritants such as fumes, fresh newsprint, strong odors, smoke and various types of dust may bring on symptoms. A diagnosis of nonallergic rhinitis is made after an allergy cause is ruled out. This often requires allergy skin or blood tests. A physical examination, allergy testing and a CT scan of the nose and sinuses are often used to assess and diagnose the condition of nonallergic rhinitis.

Causes of Nonallergic rhinitis

The common causes and risk factor's of Nonallergic rhinitis include the following:

Blood vessels in your nose expanding (dilating), filling the nasal lining with blood and fluid.

Inflammation of the lining of the nose.

Smoke and other irritants.

Temperature or atmospheric changes.

Alcohol.

Psychological and Emotional factors.

Prolonged use of decongestant nasal drops or sprays.

Exposure to irritants.

Symptoms of Nonallergic rhinitis

Some sign and symptoms related to Nonallergic rhinitis are as follows:

Stuffy nose.

Congestion.

Mucus (phlegm) in the throat (postnasal drip).

Sneezing.

Postnasal drainage.

Itchy nose, throat, eyes, and ears.

Treatment of Nonallergic rhinitis

Here is list of the methods for treating Nonallergic rhinitis:

Use an over-the-counter nasal saline spray or homemade saltwater solution to flush the nose of irritants and help thin the mucus and soothe the membranes in your nose.

Antihistamines help to reduce the effects of histamine, which can decrease the symptoms of itching, sneezing, or runny nose.

Turbinate reduction is also used.

If your symptoms aren't easily controlled by decongestants or antihistamines, your doctor may suggest a prescription corticosteroid nasal spray, such as budesonide (Rhinocort), fluticasone (Flonase), mometasone (Nasonex) or triamcinolone (Nasacort).

Pseudoephedrine-containing drugs (Sudafed, Actifed, others) and phenylephrine.

Surgery has a limited role.

Milium - Prevention Tips and Treatment Methods

Alternative Medicine:

Colloid milium is more common in fair-skinned individuals. Colloid has a distinct electron microscopic appearance, which helps to distinguish it from amyloid. Colloid milium (CM) is a rare cutaneous deposition disease with at least 3 distinct subtypes. Colloid milium (CM) is a rare cutaneous deposition disorder characterized by the presence of multiple dome-shaped. Colloid milium is a degenerative condition linked to excessive sun exposure and possibly exposure to petroleum products and hydroquinone. Colloid milium is a rare condition characterized by (1) the presence of multiple, dome-shaped, amber- or flesh-colored papules developing on light-exposed skin and (2) the observance of dermal colloid under light microscopy.

Lesions are usually asymptomatic aside from occasional pruritus and are only distressing to patients due to their unsightly appearance. Pigmented colloid milium has a distinct clinical presentation. Colloid milium can involve upper eyelids in isolation, sparing the lower eyelids and facial skin. Such rare presentations should be kept in mind while examining similar lesions. Some entities to consider in the differential include systemic amyloidosis, primary cutaneous amyloidosis, syringomas, sarcoidosis, steatocystoma multiplex, lipoid proteinosis, molluscum contagiosum, papular mucinosis, and sebaceous hyperplasia. Dermabrasion, cryotherapy, and diathermy have been tried with limited success.

Milium -Prevention and Treatment Tips

1. Cryotherapy and chemical peels also treat Colliod millium.

2. Sunscreen use may also be helpful.

3. Genetic counseling is advisable for the rare juvenile form.

4. Solar elastosis is marked and closely approximated to the colloid.

Umbilical Hernia - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Alternative Medicine:

An umbilical hernia is a protrusion of the abdominal lining, or a portion of abdominal organ, through the area around the navel. The bulge in the umbilicus may be present all the time or may only be noticed when the child is crying, coughing, or straining during a bowel movement. It carries a mother's lifeblood to her child, and anything that might harm the child is removed by her mother. Umbilical hernias are most common in infants, but they can affect adults as well. It is often most visible when the child cries or strains, as the pressure pushes the abdominal contents or fluid through the hole causing it to bulge. The contents of the hernia are contained within a lining called the hernia sac. A hernia is present at the site of the umbilicus (commonly called a navel, or belly button) in the newborn; although sometimes quite large, these hernias tend to resolve without any treatment by around the age of 5 years. The umbilicus, or belly button, is a natural weakness in the abdominal wall where hernias commonly occur.

Most umbilical hernias have no symptoms. Umbilical hernias usually happen because of a hole or a weak area in the muscles of the abdominal wall. The exact incidence is unknown, but may be as high as 1 in 6 infants. Most umbilical hernias close on their own by age 2. The size of the umbilical hernia is determined by feeling the opening in the abdominal muscle, not by the amount of skin protruding (or sticking) out. Umbilical hernias are found in about 20% of newborns, especially in premature infants. Umbilical hernias can happen to people of any age. Umbilical hernias in adults happen more often in women than in men. You may be more likely to have a hernia if other family members have them. This type of hernia is almost never painful - pain in that area is usually from some other cause. Umbilical hernias are common in infants. In addition, low birth weight and premature infants are more likely to have umbilical hernias. They are more common in African-American children. If the hernia is excessively large, it may be surgically repaired.

Causes of Umbilical hernia

The common causes and risk factor's of Umbilical hernia include the following:

It is caused by the incomplete closure of the umbilical ring (muscle), through which the umbilical blood vessels passed to provide nourishment to the developing fetus.

Fluid in the abdominal cavity.

For adults, being overweight or having multiple pregnancies may increase the risk of developing an umbilical hernia.

Having a very long labor when delivering your baby.

A family history of Umbilical hernias can make you more likely to develop a Umbilical hernia.

Abnormalities of the urethra.

Symptoms of Umbilical hernia

Some symptoms related to Umbilical hernia are as follows:

A soft protrusion over the umbilicus.

Nausea and vomiting.

New lump in the groin or other abdominal wall area.

Weakness or dizziness.

Redness or discoloration.

Fever.

Sometimes pain precedes the discovery of the lump.

Abdominal swelling or distension.

Treatment of Umbilical hernia

Here is list of the methods for treating Umbilical hernia:

Usually, no treatment is required unless the defect persists past the age of 3 to 4 years.

The ideal treatment forumbilical hernias is surgical repair.

In extremely rare cases, bowel or other tissue can protrude and become strangulated (lack of blood flow to a section of bowel).

The doctor may do a genital or pelvic exam or other tests.

Ulcerative Colitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Alternative Medicine:

Ulcerative colitis (UC) refers to a disease in which the lining of the colon (the large intestine) becomes inflamed. It occurs at any age. The disease may involve the entire colon (pancolitis), only the rectum (ulcerative proctitis) or, more commonly, somewhere between the two. The amount of the colon affected usually predicts the severity of the disease. The disease usually begins in the rectum or the rectum and the sigmoid colon (the lower end of the large intestine) but may eventually spread along part or all of the large intestine. In patients with ulcerative colitis, ulcers and inflammation of the inner lining of the colon lead to symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. Like Crohn's disease, another common IBD, ulcerative colitis can be painful and debilitating and sometimes can lead to life-threatening complications. Ulcerative colitis is a rare disease, with an incidence of about one person per 10,000 in North America. The disease tends to be more common in northern areas.

Ulcerative colitis is defined as mild, moderate or severe, according to the frequency of diarrhoea, the presence of blood and how generally unwell the person is. Ulcerative proctitis, which is confined to the rectum, is a very common and relatively benign form of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is more common than Crohn's disease. The disease may involve the entire colon (pancolitis), only the rectum (ulcerative proctitis) or, more commonly, somewhere between the two. It can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders and to another type of IBD called Crohn's disease. Blood tests and stool samples help diagnosis, but the key test is internal examination of the bowel, and biopsy. It most commonly begin during adolescence and early adulthood, but they also can begin during childhood and later in life. Ulcerative colitis is an intermittent disease, with periods of exacerbated symptoms, and periods that are relatively symptom-free.

Causes of Ulcerative colitis

The common causes and risk factor's of Ulcerative colitis include the following:

The exect cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown.

Abnormal activation of the immune system in the intestines.

A family history of Ulcerative colitis.

Smoking.

Generalized enhanced reactivity against intestinal bacterial antigens.

Environmental factors such as nutrition and exposure to various infections.

Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis

Some sign and symptoms related to Ulcerative colitis are as follows:

Loss of body fluids and nutrients.

Weight loss.

Nausea.

Abdominal cramps and pain.

Night sweats.

Fatigue.

Loss of appetite.

Fever.

Extreme tiredness.

Treatment of Ulcerative colitis

Here is list of the methods for treating Ulcerative colitis:

Aminosalicylates, drugs that contain 5-aminosalicyclic acid (5-ASA), help control inflammation.

Drugs such as azathioprine and mercaptopurine have been used to maintain remissions in people with ulcerative colitis who would otherwise need long-term corticosteroid therapy.

Taking nutritional supplements to restore normal growth and development in children and teens.

Steroids can help reduce inflammation, but they have numerous side effects, including a puffy face, excessive facial hair, night sweats, insomnia and hyperactivity. Long-term use of these drugs in children can lead to stunted growth.

Laxatives and antidiarrhoeals medicines.

Surgery is used in people who have severe symptoms that are not controlled by medicines, who have unacceptable side effects from medicines, or who have a very high risk of colon cancer because of extensive inflammation in the whole colon.

Parkinson's Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Alternative Medicine:

Parkinson's Disease is a disease mostly affecting middle-aged and elderly people characterized by tremors and rigid, slow movement. It is also known as PD or Parkinson disease. Early symptoms of PD are subtle and occur gradually. Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. The disease is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. Parkinson's disease was named after Scottish physician James Parkinson, who published a description of the condition. Cardinal features include resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. In some people the disease progresses more quickly than in others. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement ( bradykinesia ), and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement ( akinesia ). PD usually affects people over the age of 50. The risk of PD increases with age, so analysts expect the financial and public health impact of this disease to increase as the population gets older. In Parkinson's, cells are destroyed in part of the brain stem - the substantia nigra, which sends out fibers to the corpus stratia, gray and white bands of tissue in both sides of the brain. Parkinson's disease is called idiopathic Parkinson's because the cause is unknown. In the other forms of parkinsonism, a cause is known or suspected.
