Introduction To The Ayurvedic System of Medicine
Ayurvedic Medicine:
Ayurveda is India's traditional medicine derived from nature and has been practiced since time immemorial. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that can be literally translated as "the natural science of life". Ayurveda was the method of health care practised by the followers of the Vedic culture, especially the sages who meditate on mountains and don't have any contact with the world. For many generations, this science was passed on orally through disciple succession, or from teacher to student. Nowadays, Ayurveda has gained popularity in the modern world, among rich and poor alike, in different corners of the planet.
Ayurveda teaches the prevention of disease, provides formulas for the rejuvenation of our bodily parts, and of course longevity. Ayurveda guarantees that through certain ways of living, not only can we prevent heart disease, but we can also better know ourselves and see the world around us in a proper perspective, live a long healthy life in balance and harmony, reach our maximum potential, and reveal our true inner nature.
Tridosha system
The main concept of Ayurvedic medicine is the theory that health exists when there is a harmony among the three fundamental bodily humours or doshas known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
- Vata has to do with the function of the nervous system.
- Pitta is the energy and it has to do with the digestive and venous system
- Kapha is the body fluid principle which relates to mucous, lubrication and the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system.
All Ayurvedic physicians believe that these ancient ideas, based on the vedic scriptures, exist in harmony with the physical reality. These Ayurvedic concepts allow practitioners to examine the homeostasis of the whole system. One dosha is predominant in everyone, but all doshas are contaminated by the remaining two.
Ayurvedic tastes
Ayurveda states that the tastes of foods or plants have specific physiological effects. Those tastes that transform during and after digestion are very powerful.
The following are the different ayurvedic tastes:
Madhura, or sweet: Sweet foods are in goodness. They nourish, cool, moisten, oil, and increase the body weight.
Amla, or sour: Sour foods are in passion. They warm, oil, and increase body weight too.
Lavan, or salty: Salty foods are in passion. They heat, dissolve, invigorate, soften, oil, and increase body weight.
Katu, or bitter: Bitter foods are in passion as well. They cool, dry, purify and reduce body weight.
Tikta, or pungent: Pungent foods are also in passion. They warm, dry, stimulate, and reduce body weight.
Kasaya, or astringent: Astringent foods are in passion. They cool, dry, reduce stickiness.
Panchakarma and Ayurvedic massage
Panchakarma is the five actions or modalities. It is a collection of purification processes that Ayurveda reccommends for some diseases and for periodic cleaning of the body. A treatment of Pancharkarma normally includes a short-term dietary prescription, massage, herbs, at times purgatives also, sweat baths, medicated enemas, and nasal cleansing.
Treatment such as Ayurvedic massage is for various age and use to cure other common disorders. Some of the advantages are pain relief, improved blood circulation, stress relief, better sleep, flexibility, sports performance and emotional wellbeing. Massage therapy can soothe pain, relax tense muscles, and decrease the swelling that accompanies arthritis. Studies claim that, with ayurvedic massage, deep-rooted toxins between the joints and tissues are slackened and released into the body for elimination through natural toxin-release processes. There are different types of ayurvedic treatments such as panchakarma and marma massage. Ayurvedic massage is especially developed in South India, in the state of Kerala and Sri Lanka.

Hair Loss Remedies - Simple Ayurvedic Treatments
Ayurvedic Medicine:
Hair loss is one of the most embarrassing problem facing most men and women in the world today. It is a common notion that hair loss occurs normally with advancing age, and nothing can be done about that. But that is a wrong belief. There are several effective ways in which hair loss and other hair related problems can be nipped in the bud. The following are some of the most effective home remedies in which this can be achieved.
Treatment with Simple Home Remedies
Remedy 1
This remedy works if your hair are continuously breaking off and falling. Extract the juice of a single lemon. Finely grind the powder of the root of a banyan tree and mix thoroughly in the lemon juice. Wash your hair with this solution. When done, dry your hair with a drier and then apply more than the normal amount of coconut oil on the scalp. Do this regularly. Within a few days you will find the quality of your hair improving.
Remedy 2
Prepare the fine powder of the amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) and soak it in water. Keep this overnight. In the morning, squash the powder in the water and let it exude thoroughly into the water. You will get a mild pasty consistency. Then squeeze the juice of a lemon or two. Use this vitamin C rich solution to wash your hair. The solution will foam. Work your hands into the roots of the hair till the foam is profuse. After fifteen minutes of this treatment, you can wash it off. This kind of treatment will not only treat hair loss, but it will also make the hair blacker, denser, longer and softer. A month of this treatment on a daily basis will show you the positive results.
Remedy 3
Boil some udad daal (lentils) in water. When boiled enough, let them cool. Then mash the daal and apply it vigorously on the hair, working at the roots. This treatment provides proteins to your hair, which is very necessary for their proper growth. Within a few days of this continuous treatment, your hair loss problems will begin to dwindle.
Remedy 4
This treatment works for alopecia, i.e. baldness or thinness of hair. Take a dry ripe amalaki fruit and grind it to a powder. Put this powder in coconut oil or chameli (Jasminum grandiflorum, Spanish Jasmine) oil. Use this oil to massage the scalp. Then put this solution in water and wash the hair thoroughly. Continue this for a month to observe benefits. You must also chew on the dry amalaki fruit several times a day.
Remedy 5
If your hair is thinning out, then the following remedy can help. Prepare a mixture of the powders of the seeds, leaves and peel of a pomegranate. Add this to mustard oil. Keep it on a flame. The powders will begin to get cooked. When the powders seem cooked enough, then strain the oil through a cloth and collect the filtrate in a bottle. Cork this bottle. Apply this oil twice or thrice on the scalp in a day. Within a few days, hair loss will stop and new hair will begin growing.
Remedy 6
Grind some green coriander and extract the juices from it. Use these juices to massage onto the scalp. This will make your hair soft and black and stop hair loss. This remedy is simple but it is so effective that it can even make hair grow back on the scalp. Hence it is looked upon as a treatment for alopecia.
Remedy 7
This is not a specific remedy, but it is a general method to care for your hair to stop hair loss in the future. Collect one tablespoon of powder of shikakai (Acacia concinna, acacia) and ritha (Sapindus mukorossi, soapnut). Add this powder to half pint of water and boil it. When the boiling has taken place properly, then cool it, strain it, and use the filtrate as you would use a regular shampoo. This is the best natural shampoo in the world, and perhaps the world's oldest pH balanced shampoo. Daily using this shampoo will keep all hair loss problems at bay.
Treatment with Special Ayurvedic Methods
Bhringaraja is the drug of choice for hair problems. It is either taken orally or is used for massaging the scalp on a daily basis in the form of Maha Bhringaraja taila or Nilibhringadi taila. The general mode of using it is to massage on the scalp thoroughly and then to have a bath one hour later. But it must be remembered that Bhringaraja will first remove the weak hair from the scalp. Hence it may appear that the hair is thinning more in the beginning. This is temporary though; the new hair that will grow will be healthier and stronger.
Hair loss (and in fact, all problems relating to hair) are kapha problems. They happen when the kapha dosha is vitiated. Hence, kapha must not be allowed to accumulate in the body. This happens when there is a common cold. For this reason, common colds must be treated quickly. The same can be said about sinusitis.

Ayurvedic Beauty: Natural Approach To Aging Skin
Ayurvedic Medicine:
The wisdom of Ayurveda goes well beyond disease prevention. Ayurveda beauty relies on freeing the body from toxins, restoring cellular balance, facilitating complete elimination and re-establishing the balance of the doshas (or mind/body types).
Ayurvedic beauty includes two things - diet and lifestyle. These two things help you achieve the way you look and feel.
Ayurveda considers beauty as an intimate part of the human personality.
But before you can apply ayurvedic principles to make you look good day after day and year after year you first need to figure out which of the following three categories your skin falls into:
- If your skin is dry, thin and sensitive, susceptible to dullness and wrinkles, you have Vata type skin.
- If your skin is more reddish, warm, and extremely sensitive, prone to breakouts and easily affected by the foods you eat, heat and sun you have Pitta skin.
- Kapha skin tends to be lustrous, oily and thick in texture. It's prone to clogged pores, breakouts and toxic buildup.
Once you have determined which skin type your skin falls into, you can try some of the following suggestions for making your skin look and feel young.
Caring for Vata (dry) skin type
Vata skin types should avoid any products that are too drying (alcohol-based cleansers). Perform Ayurvedic Oil Massage to your whole body in the morning before you shower.
Use gentle, all-natural moisturizer to keep skin hydrated. Provide added deep lipid support.
Use gentle, moisture-balancing cleanser and splash your face with water several times when you cleanse.
Caring for Pitta (sensitive) skin type
Pitta skin type needs both cooling and nurturing. Use skin care products that enhance resistance to the sun.
Pitta skin types should avoid products that are too abrasive or heating.
Try ayurvedic herb Flame of Forest. It can help protect Pitta skin from photo-sensitivity. But unlike other ayurvedic herbs, it needs to be used in combination with other herbs for a balanced effect on the skin.
Use cooling oil for the daily massage to stimulate circulation and create a glow.
Use gently, natural skin care products for cleansing and moisturizing.
Caring for Kapha (oily) skin type
Kapha skin type needs cleansing the most. That's because Kapha skin has excessive oil on the surface.
Try not to counteract oiliness with products that are too drying instead, try cleansing the pores from the inside. by eating less heavy, sweet, and oily foods.
Don't clog the pores by using greasy creams.
Take warm baths, cleanse with a gentle herbal cleanser, and exfoliate with an herbal clay twice a week to gently cleanse the pores, remove impurities, and open the channels.

Ayurvedic Herbal Home Remedies for Stress
Ayurvedic Medicine:
Stress is the disruption of homeostasis and physical or psychological stimuli. Stress is a feeling that's created when we react to particular events. Stress is simply a fact of nature -- forces from the outside world affecting the individual. Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment. it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it. The human body responds to stressors by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. The hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the bloodstream. These hormones speed up heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and metabolism.
Stress can also be triggered by alarming experiences, either real or imaginary. A little of this stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge. Stress has driven evolutionary change (the development and natural selection of species over time). And the nervous system quickly returns to its normal state, standing by to respond again when needed. Sometimes stress is helpful ?it can encourage you to meet a deadline or get things done. But long-term stress can increase the risk of diseases like depression, heart disease and a variety of other problems. When the threat or stressor is identified or realised, the body's stress response is a state of alarm. During this stage adrenaline will be produced in order to bring about the fight or flight response. There is also some activation of the HPA axis, producing cortisol. Stress also activates the neurally mediated discharge of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla and of hypothalamic hormones that initiate the neuroendocrine cascade, culminating in glucocorticoid release from the adrenal cortex. If the stressor persists, it becomes necessary to attempt some means of coping with the stress. Although the body begins to try to adapt to the strains or demands of the environment, the body cannot keep this up indefinitely, so its resources are gradually depleted. Term of stress in serious and recognized cases, such as those of post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosomatic illness, has scarcely helped clear analysis of the generalized "stress" phenomenon.
