The disease? Social anxiety disorder … previously known as shyness.

You may have seen this campaign firsthand; ads stating "Imagine being allergic to people" were distributed widely, celebrities gave interviews to the press and psychiatrists gave lectures on this new disease in the top 25 media markets.

As a result, mentions of social anxiety in the press rose from about 50 to over 1 billion in just two years … social anxiety disorder became the "third most common mental illness" in the U.S. … and Paxil skyrocketed to the top of the charts as one of the most profitable and most prescribed drugs in the United States.

Clearly there was not a rapid rise in the number of people suffering from extreme shyness during this time … there was just a masterful marketing campaign that successfully whispered into enough people's ears, "If you're shy or nervous around others, you need to take this drug."

And that's just what millions did.

Drug Companies are Seeking to Medicalize Society … and You

Drug companies would like you to believe that for every symptom you experience, there's a pill you need to treat it. This includes symptoms you might not have thought twice about, had you not seen the very same ones advertised on television in relation to an "underdiagnosed" and "undertreated" disease.

As authors of Selling Sickness: The Pharmaceutical Industry and Disease Mongering wrote in the British Medical Journal:

"There's a lot of money to be made from telling healthy people they're sick. Some forms of medicalizing ordinary life may now be better described as disease mongering: widening the boundaries of treatable illness in order to expand markets for those who sell and deliver treatments.

Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in sponsoring the definition of diseases and promoting them to both prescribers and consumers. The social construction of illness is being replaced by the corporate construction of disease."

This practice has resulted in the creation of unholy alliances between drug companies, health care providers and supposed consumer groups, all working in concert to convince people they're sick and in need of drug treatment. As the British Medical Journal continued:

"Within many disease categories informal alliances have emerged, comprising drug company staff, doctors, and consumer groups. Ostensibly engaged in raising public awareness about underdiagnosed and undertreated problems, these alliances tend to promote a view of their particular condition as widespread, serious, and treatable.

Because these "disease awareness" campaigns are commonly linked to companies' marketing strategies, they operate to expand markets for new pharmaceutical products.

Alternative approaches—emphasizing the self limiting or relatively benign natural history of a problem, or the importance of personal coping strategies—are played down or ignored."

What the drug companies don't want you to know is that ALL of their drugs carry risks of serious side effects, some worse than the alleged diseases they're meant to treat. They also don't want you to know that, more often than not, you can overcome problematic symptoms yourself by making positive dietary and lifestyle changes.

And, in fact, this latter form of "treatment" is virtually the only way to actually cure an illness, as drugs typically do absolutely nothing but temporarily mask your symptoms.

How to Brand a Disease - and Sell a Cure

The manner in which prescription drugs are marketed today can be readily
understood if you read the 1928 book "Propaganda," by Edward Bernays, the
father of PR.

Bernays knew that public relations business was less about selling things
than about creating the conditions for things to sell themselves.
Pharmaceutical marketers, following in his footsteps, sell drugs by
selling diseases -- a system known as "disease branding." Illnesses such
as panic disorder, restless legs syndrome, bipolar disorder, and ADHD
were once considered rare until a marketing campaign transformed the
brand in order to sell more drugs.

According to CNN:

"If all drugs were harmless, disease branding would be relatively
harmless, too. But no drug is completely benign ... Detrol can make
elderly people delirious and may cause memory problems. Paxil is
associated with sexual dysfunction and dependence ... Side effects like
these are a part of every drug. But they are never part of the brand."

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Drug companies are master marketers and they fully embrace the
ideology that Edward Bernays' -- the father of PR -- is most known for.
Instead of trying to sell their drugs on their own merit, they invest
untold amounts of money into creating diseases their drugs are meant to
treat.

By doing this, they create instant patients, patients who will likely
go to their physicians and request the said drug by name.
It's an ingenious model and one that the PR industry has won awards
over … the only problem is that it's detrimental to your health.

The Fine Art of Disease Mongering

Pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than research --
almost twice as much. Part of these costs often go toward hiring
expensive PR firms, celebrity spokespeople, and physicians and academics
to pedal their wares.

As CNN reported, in order to market its antidepressant Paxil,
GlaxoSmithKline hired a PR firm to create a "public awareness campaign"
about an "under-diagnosed" disease.

The Rise and Fall of Pharmacracy

By Christopher Kent, DC, JD

Psychiatrist Thomas S. Szasz (1) has written extensively on the
medicalization of American politics. Medicalization is defined as a
process or tendency whereby the phenomena, which had belonged to another
field such as education, law, religion, and so on, have been redefined as
medical phenomena. (2) Thus, medicalization is a process by which the
medical profession asserts authority over a sphere of life previously
overseen by guardians of morality.

Szasz describes the ideologies of legitimization: theocracy (God’s will);
democracy (consent of the governed); socialism (economic equality); and
pharmacracy (the therapeutic state). The emergence of the therapeutic
state is a product of the 20th century.

The Rise of Government in Health Care

From 1776 to 1914, the federal government played no role in civilian
medicine. In 1914, the first antinarcotic legislation was enacted. As the
century progressed, the federal government’s role in medicine exploded.

Szasz offers the following statistics:

In 1950, funding for the National Institute for Mental Health was
less than $1 million. In 1992, it reached $1 billion.

In 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were enacted, their cost was
approximately $65 billion. In 1993, it was nearly $939 billion.

Between 1960 and 1998, the public expenditure on health care
increased more than 100 times, from $35 to $3,633.

In addition to these expenditures, government spending in general
went from a budget of $13.6 billion in fiscal 1941, to $1.65 trillion in
1998.

One of Szasz’s greatest insights is his description of the process where

coercion is transformed into medical therapy:

    1. The subject’s “condition” is diagnosed as a disease.
    2. The intervention imposed is defined as a treatment.
    3. Legislators and judges ratify these categorizations as “diseases”
and “treatments.”

Coercion Becomes a Public Health Measure

The traditional role of coercion as a public health measure dealt with
the transmission of communicable diseases. Persons with communicable
diseases were quarantined (as in measles) or banished (as in leprosy).
Yet as a growing number of behaviors were defined as “diseases” coerced
treatment was added to the armamentarium of public health and state
authority.

Medicalized conditions include such diverse conditions as gambling (3),
smoking (4), gun violence (5), and racism (6). Coercion is used not
merely to isolate those with communicable diseases, but to force
treatments on persons with tuberculosis, alcoholism, and a plethora of
mental illnesses where the subject is deemed a threat to “self and
others.” Children are particularly susceptible to coerced medical
interventions, ranging from vaccination to behavior modifying drugs for
such dubious diagnoses as ADD/ADHD. Even when parents elect alternative
courses of health care, courts have ordered dangerous treatments against
the wishes of both parents. Pharmacracy has led to an uncritical
deference for allopathic intervention by the legislatures and the courts.

Thankfully, pharmacracy is a 20th century paradigm. As we approached the
turn of the century (and the new millennium), a subtle revolution was
building steam. Despite economic disincentives, and medicine’s cultural
authority, Americans sought to reclaim control over their lives and
turned to “alternative” care in unprecedented numbers.

A study by Eisenberg (7) found that in 1990, 34 percent of the people
surveyed used at least one “unconventional” intervention in the past
year. Indeed, their visits to “alternative” practitioners exceeded visits
to primary care medical physicians in that year. A follow-up study (8) in
1997 reported that utilization of “alternative” health care had increased
to 42.1 percent. Total out-of-pocket expenditures doubled.

The trend is growing. Kessler (9) reported that 67.6 percent of those

surveyed had used at least one “complementary” or “alternative” approach
to health care in their lifetime. According to the article, utilization
by Baby Boomers is about half, and use by post-Baby Boomers (who have
reached the age of 33) is 70 percent.

A Wellness Revolution

The true revolution, however, is not in seeking different techniques for
treating disease. It is the emergence of a different perspective on the
human condition. This is the distinction between “alternative treatment”
and “wellness.” People have realized that valuable as medical treatment
may be in its proper context, it does not address vital, core issues
concerning the human condition.

Legendary economist Paul Zane Pilzer (10) has written, “What we call the
‘health care’ business is really the sickness business. The $1.4 trillion
we spend on medical care is concerned with treating the symptoms of
sickness. It has very little to do with being stronger or healthier.”
Pilzer predicts that wellness is destined to become a trillion dollar
industry.

Pilzer wrote, “I define ‘wellness’ as money spent to make you feel
healthier, even when you’re not ‘sick’ by any standard medical terms ...
As much as we focus on the financial and lifestyle benefits of the
business, the real benefit is what you can do to change a life -- and the
lives of all people who are touched by that life.”

Chiropractic is perfectly positioned to provide the leadership for the
wellness movement, which is both a revolution and a renaissance. We have
the opportunity to bring more fullness and joy to humanity than ever
before. Will we rise to the challenge, or abdicate our birthright by
limiting our vision? Open your mind, open your heart, and let your light
shine. Embrace the challenge and change the world.

Talking to Doctors

KEVIN P. MILLER

Check Out You Doctor
Before talking to your doctor, you may want to read what other patients have to say about him or her. You can use the pay-for-service web site Health Grades.
Tough Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Before you give a conventional doctor complete authority over your treatment selection, consider how narrow their education was. Most doctors only know pharmaceuticals. After all these years without a decent cancer treatment it is clear that pharmaceuticals are not the likely answer.

Many parts of modern medicine are complicated, but treatment selection is not. Ask your doctor the following questions about the treatment he or she is recommending and you will know enough to make an informed decision.

What are the chances of success?
What are the side effects and what percentage of patients experience each side-effect? If side affects are known the percentage is also known.
What medications are usually prescribed as a result of each of those side effects?
What are the side effects of those medications?

You will find that doctors do not want you to know this information. The reason is that they want you to have the most positive attitude towards the treatments they recommend. However, if you are considering alternative treatments you must learn all you can about the recommended conventional treatments in order to compare them to alternatives.
Approaching Your Doctor with Alternative Information

Before discussing alternatives with your doctor, realize that your doctor has received disinformation about alternative treatments. There are many books on this subject, but the best is "The Cancer Industry" by Ralph Moss.  If you read such books you will learn that your doctor:

Has completely distorted information about alternatives due to the pharmaceutical controlled medical establishment.
Can not tell you about contradictions between alternatives and conventional medicine.
Will most likely get upset at you and insist that you not take the alternatives even though he or she does not know about alternatives.

If you want to discuss alternative treatments with your doctor, consider that your doctor should give you at least as much control over "repair decisions" as your automobile mechanic.

Your doctor should realize that there are other viable treatments than the ones he or she knows about. Therefore, you might be able to discuss alternatives without your doctor trying to intimidate you with anger and threats to discontinue care. These are typical tools doctors use to persuade you to continue to come to them for treatment. They cannot morally refuse to see you and you do not have to do not have to take what they tell you to take.
Warning

Many doctors appear to have an open mind about alternatives and then try and convince you to take conventional treatments first.
The Best Way to Make the Treatment Decision

The best way to make the treatment decision is to make that decision at home with all the information you have collected at your fingertips. The doctors office is the worst place to make this decision. You may not be able to understand how different treatments work, but you can easily understand the risks and effectiveness of different treatments if your doctor is willing to tell you. If you agree to make the decision at home, then you will know that the decision was yours.

WE BECOME SILENT

KEVIN P. MILLER

International award-winning filmmaker Kevin P. Miller unveils the worldwide threat to medical freedom of choice in a new blockbuster documentary, WE BECOME SILENT:The Last Days of Health Freedom.

WE BECOME SILENT details the ongoing attempts by multinational pharmaceutical interests, giant food companies, and government agencies to limit the public’s access to vitamins, herbs and other therapies. The film highlights the U.S. government’s complicity in suppressing the truth about the effectiveness of alternative/complementary medicines, and outlines the international plan to eliminate freedom of choice in healthcare through the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Narrated by Dame Judi Dench, the noted UK actress who has won multiple Golden Globe awards and dozens of other honors throughout her prestigious career, WE BECOME SILENT is a powerful statement about the dominance of multinational corporations over personal freedoms. This 28-minute film describes the ominous bureaucratic shadow being cast by Codex, in concert with the World Trade Organization and others — and the challenges consumers face in trying to maintain freedom of choice in health care.

WE BECOME SILENT features the only known video from a Codex meeting, exclusive interviews with delegates to the Codex Alimentarius Commission, U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials, two U.S. Congressmen, actor Mel Gibson, and consumer health activists from across the globe.

Alternative Doctors

There is a universal disdain in medical schools for the use of alternative, plant-based treatments. The fact that pharmaceutical companies are usually the largest contributors to such schools might be the cause of this attitude. Regardless of why this has occurred, this attitude is usually carried into the profession. So instead of investigating alternative treatments, most doctors immediately ridicule them or downplay their effectiveness.

However, there are a few open-minded doctors who have decided to investigate alternative treatments independent of their education. They find viable treatments with no side effects. However, if these doctors start to prescribe alternative treatments they become targets for harrassment and persecution.
A Story of Three Persecutions

In 1994 New York alternative healthcare advocates helped pass the Alternative Medical Practice Act designed to help guarantee that people would have access to alternative medical doctors by barring the State of New York from taking away the licenses of Alternative Medical Doctors just because they practiced alternative or non conventional medicine. Despite the passing of this legislation, the Medical Board bureaucrats found a way to avoid the intent of the law. Alternative medical doctors were once again targeted and eliminated from medicine.

Dr. Jennifer Daniels, MD of Syracuse was brought up on charges after successfully treating a patient with diabetes using only diet and exercise. In spite of a highly publicized study unveiled by the Secretary of Health & Human Services proving that diet and exercise was more effective than drug treatment. Eventually Dr. Daniels got her license back after it was suspended for two years, but the cost was devastating. The doctor was financially depleted and no medical employer was willing to hire her despite impeccable educational & medical credentials(Harvard BA, University of Pennsylvania MD). She is planning on leaving the country And that is a successful case.

Dr. Rebecca Carley, MD from Hicksville, Long Island successfully pioneered a treatment to reverse the injuries from vaccines such as autism and autism spectrum disorders, which have been growing. Dr. Carley has a public access cable TV show "What's Ailing America; Dr. Carley Responds" in which she was able to reach a larger audience warning of the potential dangers of vaccines and other political issues. Dr. Carley's license was suspended in July 2003. The suspension was solely on the basis of her "psychological impairment". This was an arbitrary attempt to control her speech, both medical and political. Dr. Carley's has been doing nutritional and lifestyle counseling, but is facing severe financial hardship.

Dr. Serafina Corsello, MD was one of the best known alternative practitioners. She was on the first advisory commission advising the Office of Alternative Medicine of the NIH in 1992. She published a book "The Ageless Woman", had two large medical centers one in midtown Manhattan and the other in Huntington, Long Island. She has and continues to lecture all over the country and in many parts of the world on nutrition and women's health. Charges were brought against her for too much testing, use of vitamin therapy, Chelation therapy and diagnosing lead toxicity. Unfortunately her lawyer filed the answer to the charges too late and the state deemed that she admitted to all the charges. Her medical license was revoked.
Selecting Among Alternative Treatments

It can be difficult to compare alternative treatments and medicines. The information you need to make an informed decision can be gathered rapidly, thanks to the eveexpanding wealth of knowledge that is available on the internet. Taking responsibility for ones own health is the key that will open the door to better health and disease-free living!
